Grave Marking for Revolutionary War Veteran Ancestor

Recommended Posts

Thought I might mention that this Saturday I'll be going to SW Virginia to attend a grave marking by the Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution for my 5th great grandfather on my mom's side Robert "Robin" Vicars. He served in Lord Dunmore's War in 1774 against the Shawnee and Mingo and then in the Revolution. He came to America from England as an indentured servant and made the most of opportunities in the new world. He is buried on his farm in Russel County VA. His daughter Molly married Joseph H Gilbert - the son of another Revolutionary War veteran from Virginia (Joseph Hiram Gilbert) and after much "begetting" down through the Gilbert line to my mom, I was the product.

So if any of you happen to be Sons of the American Revolution headed for a grave marking ceremony in SW VA on Saturday I will see you there....

Cool.

On a related topic... how did you learn where he fought?  I have some lineage back to well before the revolution but no information regarding anyone's service prior to WWII. Is there some database where such things can be looked up?

Ancestry.com and just a lot of digging. Sometimes you get lucky and someone else already has your person in their tree and has info on them. Sometimes that info might be listed in pension applications and things like that .

Other relatives did the digging on ancestry.com to establish the lineage. I just wondered if there was somewhere else to look.

I'm not sure where he was from but my sister has done our family tree and I have a great great great great great great grandfather who was a general in the continental army and was a friend of George Washongton. His name was John Woodford. He is buried at a church in lower Manhattan.

Good to see that someone cared enough to bring their children.

For sure. That is one of the problems with the riots right now. These little snowflakes didn't learn history like we did, hence the reason they don't LOVE this country.
