Tell Me About DeSoto Rifle & Pistol Club

I live in Memphis, and I'm looking for an outdoor range to use. The only two options I've found are Memphis Sport Shooting Association (MSSA) and DeSoto Rifle & Pistol Club (DRPC). MSSA would be a lot more convenient for me, but I think I've ruled it out because of the $500 initiation fee. I might only use a range 2 or 3 times a year and can't justify paying a $500 initiation fee for such light use. I also might move out of the Memphis area anytime, and I would hate to have to amortize that fee over a year or less. I also figure DRPC ought to be less crowded because it's farther from Memphis. So that all pretty much leaves me with DRPC as my only real option.

I'm especially interested in using a range during off-peak times when I can have it to myself. Is that possible at DRPC? Are there usually many people there at sunrise on weekday mornings?

I've never shot steel targets and would like to try it, but DRPC doesn't allow members to bring their own steel targets. Does DRPC have any club-owned steel targets for members to use outside of competitions? What about a dueling tree?

I'm also interested in hearing anything else interesting about DRPC that isn't on its website.

I'd also love to hear about any other outdoor ranges in the Memphis area I'm not aware of. One without a membership requirement would be fantastic for my needs.

Thanks!

You’ll be given the combo to the lock at DPRC. It’s not a bad facility, but the staff can be overbearing at times.

I’m a member of MSSA now if you’d like to go sometime.

I might have to take you up on that sometime. I haven't been to either range yet.

There is a range near Jackson, TN that I hear is reasonably priced but I forget the name.  If you are mil or leo, I believe MSSA does a discount on the initiation fee.

Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember hearing about one near Jackson, TN. I just Googled it and found Tennessee Sports Foundation. Their membership fee does look reasonable at $150 per year, and I don't see anything about an initiation fee. This looks like it might be a better option for me than DRPC. Thanks for the heads up.

For your information if you are interested in competition shooting you can shoot USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, and 3-Gun at MSSA even though you are not a member of the club.  Non members are charged $12 to shoot the match.
