Fast By Mail Renewal, But......

Got my renewal papers in the mail a little over a week ago for my carry permit that expires on my birthday in June. Renewed all online and got my new permit for 8 years today. Great turn around considering I did the online renewal 8 days ago.

Now the but, they made the new license run from the date I filled out the online forms instead of when my old permit expired. Not a big deal but if I had known I was going to lose 3 months by renewing promptly, I would not have been in a hurry to renew and waited till closer to renewal time.

Funny as I read this I am sitting and waiting for the Driver's license center to open.

I have to get an updated photo.

At my age I'm just hoping to still be alive to renew 8 years from now! :bored:

Mine renews in August so will probably wait till July to apply for renewal. With my luck I will do it in July and it will take them 2 or 3 months to get around to renewing mine. I might do like you Jeb and renew soon as I get my renewal papers. Thre months won't be much loss verses going without for 3 months while waiting on new one........JMHO

I would have considered lifetime but the break even point for me would put me at 102 years old. The hassle was minimal doing it online. My photo is only 3 years old so they probably figured how much worse could he look.

My drivers license renewal trailed by a day and I did that online also and they dd the same thing, so I lost 3 months on that also. Got it today. Thought both were interesting, since they both were shortened when I got them to sync with my birthday and now they are not synced anymore.

I have never renewed my HCP online as the last time I renewed, a couple of years ago, the option to do so online was still in the 'coming soon' phase (as was the lifetime option.)  I originally got mine at a Driver's Testing Center in Knoxville which no longer does HCP related things but, luckily for me, the Rockwood Driver's Testing Center does (I live right on the Roane/Loudon County line.)  All renewals for my HCP thus far have been done there.  When renewing in person they always give me a receipt to show that I have renewed and they say that, along with my old permit, will serve as a valid HCP until the new one arrives if it should arrive after the old one expires.  The last time I renewed the lady at the counter even folded the receipt into sort of an open-topped envelope shape that I could slip my old HCP into.

Last time my DL was up for renewal I did renew it online.  When finished there was a page I could print out that, again, showed that I had renewed and that could be used along with my old DL as a valid DL until the new one arrived in case the old one expired first.  Not advising you to wait or not wait just mentioning that, in my case, there were things in place to mitigate the potential issue of the renewal taking overlong to arrive.

Well I have a DMV location I did mine at last time about 3 miles from my house so might just go there again. I did my DL on line and completed the form on a Thursday and a week later on Friday I had my new DL in my mail box. I have some time to give it some thought, just not gonna wait till last minute regardless of how I choose to do it................

I understand that.  The problem with me waiting until the last minute for anything is that there is a good chance I will forget and the last minute will pass right on by.

That's exactly what happened to me on my driver's license this year. I got the renewal in the mail, and thought "I'll do it later" on-line.  A week or so AFTER my birthday, I was driving to work, and realized I was driving on an expired license. Luckily, I was off a couple of days later, and was able to catch the DMV open.

Then I checked on renewing the permit so the same thing wouldn't happen again. I thought about doing the lifetime since renewing was $50.00 every 4 years, it would only take 16 years to pay for itself. Then once I realized it was only $50.00 for EIGHT years of renewal, lifetime didn't make a lot of sense for me.

I renewed in February, and mine didn't expire till August, and like it was said, my first thought was that I cheated myself out of 6 months, but 8 years from now, who cares. I look at it as getting 42 extra months for the same price that I paid on the last renewal.

I also received the renewal in 8 days or so.

I have gone back and forth on that a little.  By the time my HCP next expires I will be 49 and have already had several, different incidences where I nearly died (congestive heart failure with cause still unknown, stage 3 colon cancer with the tumor resulting in my intestine rupturing, a gall bladder that was necrotic (rotten) inside my body, a severe bleeding ulcer and so on.)   Whether or not I will live long enough to 'break even' on a $200 lifetime renewal - which would mean living to be 81  if I have it figured right - at this point is a bit of a coin toss.  Also, I am the kind of guy who considers $200 to be a lot of money.  However, I have decided that I will probably do the lifetime renewal next time, anyway, based on a couple of factors:

1.  There is no guarantee that the renewal fee will remain at $50 a pop.  In fact, I would almost be surprised if it does.  Likewise, there is no guarantee that the lifetime renewal fee will remain at $200 so the idea that, "I'll just wait and if they increase the regular renewal fee I'll go lifetime," is a bit too much of a gamble, for me.

2.  If I don't live long enough to break even - so what?  I'll be dead and that extra $50, $100 or even $150 won't make a dang bit of difference, to me.

That is just my thought process and not intended to be an evaluation or criticism of others' decision on the matter.

I first got my permit in 2006, so I guess this was my 3rd renewal.

Since that time, the 4 year renewal has changed to an 8 yr for the same price. So the cost of a regular renewal has effectively dropped 50%.

I don't remember what the original price of the lifetime was, but it has dropped significantly also. There's nothing to indicate that the price on either will go up. I just figured by the time I used up what a lifetime costs, I would be 92, and I doubt if I'll care whether or not I have a valid permit by that time, and probably wont even need one if I'm still around. :)

Got my renewal notice in the mail today, expires in June, also. Got to go to the DMV for a new photo. Another $50 out of pocket.

8 yrs this time, by then I'll be 82, probably can't even read the dang thing, LOL.

I'm not sure how fast applicants are processed for permits now, but renewal times have been short.  It's good to a part of government that operate efficiently.

I sloved that with a lifetime.  Worth it for the lack of hassle alone.

I did this also and totally concur.....BTW if you renew your drivers licence by mail they will date it by when they receive it and not from renewal date.

In another note......Since I have received my lifetime CCP, I almost always get TSA precheck at the airport.....just an added benefit
