Shooting on private property

Recommended Posts

During the January Hamblen county Planning Commission meeting the County Attorney stated that in the A-1 zone (agriculture) that only the property owner and their immediate family could legally shoot there. In his opinion it would be illegal for property owner to invite friends (or apparently distant relatives) to shoot on their property. It was pointed out that such activity would not be a commercial event but merely a private gathering of friends. He reiterated that he believed it would be illegal.

What say you?

Well, I reiterate that I believe him to be an idiot. Pretty lame.

Methinks he needs to find a different god to believe in.

I'd ask to see his law degree and proof he passed the Tn state bar. If he has valid paper, have him checked for drug use.

I wonder what he used as a basis for that opinion? I'd like to see him enforce it, and how much Hamblen County would lose in the lawsuit.

I shoot at my grandparents farm all the time.

While I do not live in his county I will continue to shoot in my county on my land as I see fit. I will also determine who can come and shoot with me. Pretty simply, my land, no ordinance against gun fire. Not for anyone but me to decide who shoots here.

I may assemble the chipmunks and sic him on this loon. thats if I do not make a stew out of them first.

Unbelievable this dude saying you can't have people over to throw lead on your own (non-city limits) private property. I would like to see him enforce that.

Huh. Other people get armies of flying monkeys, Mike is stuck with chipmunks. Where is the justice here?

Issue them tiny little ski masks, you wouldn't want them identified....

With the new Acorn Accountability Legislation, it won't matter.

Most likely, he's using the typical "guy in the know speak". He's issueing his opinion as a matter of fact. If it reduces shooting, he and other gun-haters like him are happy. If anyone calls him on it he can just step off the mound with a," ...just commenting on my feelings at the time." Or some such butt dribble. It really is amazing how many people will assume a persons statement, regardless of context, is indeed fact. People like him know this so they add it to their bag of tricks.

I don't see how it could be any violation of state law.

Wonder if he meant it would violate some local ordnance or zoning regulation or something like that?

There is currently no county ordinance limiting shooting in the A-1 zone.

This was stated "...in my opinion...". Since this is the County Attorney the Hamblen County commissioners and the Planning Commission members put a lot of faith in Mr. Cantwell's opinion.

Hmmmm...if I was a commissioner (or even not actually) I would like to know what this attorney thinks a person could be charged with.

Good question and might be asked at the next meeting if/when the shooting issue comes up again. But then just asking might give them ideas to rewrite the A-1 zoning "permissable/prohibited" uses. With the establishment of a new pistol range, albeit used only for HCP shooting, some of the county officials have revealed their feelings about lawful shooting if not gun ownership.

Complete and utter Douchebaggery I say. I hate, well at least strongly dislike, politicians. They make my tummy hurt.....

Idiot. I shoot on my farm any time I want. If I want friends to come over to shoot on my farm then I see it is no business of the local government.
