Help with a revolver

Recommended Posts

A local shop has a Dan Wesson 744 (Stainless 44 mag) for sale for $499 but the gun has some very light surface rust on the trigger, hammer and at the end of the barrel.  I'm not a revolver guy and this would be my first revolver of any kind but the rust scares me a little.  The action is smooth and crisp and I can't detect any problems when pulling the trigger.  The shop guy told me he thinks it just needs polishing and it should run around $100 to get that done.  I really would like to buy the gun but I'm just not knowledgeable enough about revolvers to make an informed decision.  Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah I probably would have jumped on that one if I saw it, very nice.

A Dremel tool, buffing wheels and polishing compound will fix the problem areas and you will get the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

Thank you to those that responded to the thread and in PM. With a little encouragement, I picked up the revolver during lunch. This is it in its current state.

Look at that Gawd awful rust. I'd say just send it to me pronto before it spreads to your other guns.....:bowrofl:

FUJIMO, thanks for the help and no I’m not giving it up. Not yet anyway. I ended up paying $445 so I was happy with it. No barrel tool included unfortunately.

Glad to help. Unless there's a current issue with the barrel I wouldn't sweat it and just go shoot that thang !

If it shots well, no need to worry about the barrel, but I would put a bit of penetrating oil on the muzzle nut. They have a tendency to seize up. Give the oil a bit of time to soak in and you'll be fine.

They had switched to plastic tools because the required torque is quite low. With plastic tools there were fewer problems with over torquing them.

That will be a good shooter! I had a 10" 41mag that was a great silhouette gun.

Sorry but it does not look good, it looks GREAT!   Who did the cleaning?

A local gunsmith did the work.  He took it completely apart to make sure there were no internal issues and said it looked great.  Actually offered to buy it from me but I had to say no.  I'm pretty excited to take it out and shoot.  Hopefully that'll happen soon.

Luck was on your side with this purchase.  The Dan Wesson revolvers have a reputation for better than average accuracy.  Competition shooters who know these systems routinely use them in silhouette and similar long distance games.  The larger bore Wessons are rarely found for sale.  The people who have them never want to turn them loose.  If you should need a barrel wrench or feeler gauge set, these are available at ewkarms.com as new merchandise.  They are reasonably priced.  Congratulations on your find.

Yes, it turned out beautifully. I'm very envious. I saw a full DW Pistol Pack with all 5 barrels and cleaning accessories several years ago at a gun show.

Why I didn't buy it...I really don't know. Guess I wasn't thinking too well that day. It was 900 for the full package. :wall:
