I recently was given a smith and wesson model 27-2 from my step fathers estate. I don't care what it's worth as it's value to me far exceeds any material value it may or may not have. That being said, how can I tell when it was made and if it's nickel or stainless steel? My gut reaction is that it's nickel since I think it would be a model 627 if it was stainless. However I am no expert. Any help is appreciated. btw the serial number is n4476XX thanks for any help.

According to the S&W Catalog SN-N 4476xx would be  manufactured in 1978. Hope this helps.

It definitely is nickel as you already know the model number since it is stamped on the frame and stainless 627's did not come out until the late 80's.

Now, we need to see some pics!

Exactly what I was hoping for! Thanks so much!

Despite the popularity of the .44 Magnums, the Model 27 is and always has been Smith & Wesson's "Top of the Line" handgun. Beautiful piece there. Shoot and enjoy it.
