1911 Ambi Thumb Safety

Recommended Posts

Was given an older colt 1911 for Xmas that has been previously modified. The original thumb safety has been discarded and a new one installed. The new one does not properly seat on the left hand side of the pistol. Essentially it won’t go down far enough to pull the slide back and load the firearm. I am in Maryville/Knoxville area, who is a good 1911 gunsmith I can trust to fix the issue properly?

I didn't notice is said Ambi safety.

It could be multiple things causing the problem, But I would start by removing the grips (both sides) and seeing how it works.

Not the grips, the original safety (non ambi) works fine... really just need a gunsmith to take it too.

Are YOU ambi? If not use the original safety as JMB designed it :)

As others have said, does it work without grips on it? If so, you probably need a woodworker more than a gunsmith.
