good cheap scope for squirrels ?

I have my sons older Marlin 915Y single shot .22lr and I want to put a scope on it for squirrels. I want a reliable scope but nothing to break my bank account. The open sights just aren't getting me anywhere. My daughter is 10 now and I'm trying to teach her hunting and we are trying to shoot some tree rats. She and I love to eat them. Any help is appreciated.

Is that receiver drilled for a scope mount or do you need to use tip-off rings like on an air rifle?

You can get better glass, but it's hard to argue that you'll need it at the ranges you're shooting at.  It sounds like you're probably better sticking with something economical but adequate to the job.  There are Bushnell and Tasco equivalents that have served generations of shooters well, too.

It is drilled and tapped and has the holes ready for a scope .

So, in that case you can either add a scope mount for the rifle - then add a scope, or you can go with a scope like above that will fit the grooves in the receiver.  

You could spend a lot or a little here. You could easily spend as much as the rifle is worth - but be able to move it to another platform later.

Were it me, I’d probably go with a simple rimfire scope and go get some squirrels.

I have a cheap 4x Tasco on my 22 thats been on there since i was a kid.  It works but for a few more bucks I would have chosen something else. I don't think this is the exact model, but I put a Simmons 3-9x on my dad's 22 when I had it for a while and it worked great.  Dime sized groups at 25-50yds.  Now that my dad's eyes have aged, he appreciates the little bit of extra magnification over the 4x on mine when he used to borrow it to hunt.

Might go see what your local Walmart has in stock. Tasco or BSA would be an affordable option. Could get a fixed 4x or maybe something like a 2-7x.

Dime size groups at around 50 feet or so is what I'd like to get it at. I figure that's good enough to harvest some and teach my little girl too.

Probably overkill, but the UTG Bugbuster is pretty decent for the cost.  Got mine from Amazon.  One of those low cost 4x may be a better option and lower weight.
