Last night I was at a bar I haven’t visited in a long time. There was a guy there who I literally have not seen in about three years or so, but he knew who I was. He was watching the election returns on the teevee and at one point he looked over at me and said, “It’s a bad night for gun owners.â€

I told him I’m not sure. I suggested on the one hand, gun control has been a losing political issue almost everywhere except California, so the Democrats might let if be. On the other hand, the Democrats might feel empowered by their mandate and, remembering 2001, deliver a mighty “**** YOU†to Republicans everywhere and plunge into an orgy of legislation they would never have been able to pass under any other circumstances. I’m not sure.

But I don’t care. America’s gun owners are reaping what they sowed, and whatever one’s take on the issues there can be no question that justice is being served, narrowly, and it’s a righteous thing. For this entire decade America’s gun owners gave the Bush Administration a pass as they wiped their asses on the Constitution; initiated pointless, destructive wars; crippled our once-excellent armed forces; systematically looted the nation and, finally, threw the entire world over the brink into what may well be the worst global depression since 1933. But they made sure their buddies on Wall Street were taken care of, and that Paulson’s former colleagues at Morgan Stanley all got their bonuses.

How can any of this be defended?

Well, America’s gun owners defended it, again and again and again. And they continued in the last few weeks, even after the extent of the Republican wealth destruction and cronyism was exposed. After the War Leader shoved a $700 billion Wall Street bailout down our throats, they had the unmitigated gall to accuse Barack Obama of advocating “socialism,†whatever the **** that is supposed to mean.

For the sake of the occasional rhetorical pat on the head – and no substantial enhancement or protection of gun rights what-so-****ing-ever – America’s gun owners would allow the War Leader and his Congressional cronies a free reign to bring this nation to its knees, economically, socially and militarily.

And the rest of America, sick to death of it, elected the War Leader’s nemesis, and a proven enemy of gun rights. Good!

Well, is there any question of how this happened? If America’s gun owners had an ounce of principle among them the wars and the looting and the mass abrogations of civil rights would have ended before they really got started. But there is no principle there. Obama was right, they are clinging to their guns out of fear, insecurity, hatred of that which is different and unknown; we understand that now from the vile anti-Obama rhetoric of the last two months. Not out of any real principle in the importance of civil rights for all people everywhere.

And now they learn what happens when you trade principles for rhetoric. You lose, maybe everything.

I was reading the LA Times today, and they were reporting about the election night jubilation in Chicago and Washington DC. Where America’s gun owners were predicting, with their usual idiot prescience, riots and mayhem whatever the outcome, there was mass joy – mass joy! – fellowship among tens of thousands of strangers in America’s most violent cities and tears of relief and hope. When was the last time any President-elect ever elicited such jubilant enthusiasm? FDR? Perhaps not even him. Will Obama deliver on the promise, on these hopes? Probably not in any concrete fashion, he and Biden really aren’t that much different from McCain, when you get down to it. But what he can do is heal this country, in our own eyes and in the eyes of a celebrating world fed up with Republican boneheaded arrogance.

If the Republican base, particularly America’s gun owners, will let him, which they probably won’t. I was reading Free Republic this morning too, where delusional wingnuts pour out their messages of hate and intolerance (characterized today by the success of California’s Proposition 8, on an issue that has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the lives of the people who favored it). Reading Free Republic made me sad. Reading the LA Times made me happy.

I did not vote for Obama; I never thought he was the best man for the job (I haven’t voted for President since 1980) and he didn’t need my vote in California anyway, But I am ever so pleased with his victory, and though I think it is dangerous to have such a strong Democratic Congress backing up a Democratic White House, I find myself looking forward to the Obama Presidency as I have never before in my entire life.

We might lose many of our gun rights along the way. But it is no more than most of America’s gun owners deserve. And there are more important things in life anyway.

Like national self respect.

So, you're okay with losing gun rights as long as the "evil warleader bushco" is out of office and we can demonstrate our cosmopolitan values by electing a black man (who happens to be a communist), but we're the brainwashed racists?

Dr. King had a dream... Not by the color of his skin, but by his character. We've gone the other way - not by his character (supporting terrorists, subverting the democratic process - ACORN vote fraud) but by the color of his skin.

Bush is to blame for destroying the constitution (funny, though, the guy that started 'extraordinary rendition' was named Clinton), torture (remember seeing those people jumping from the twin towers to avoid being burned alive? Tell me again about your definition of torture.) and Geneva Convention violations (the Geneva Convention says just one thing about the class of combatants that we have imprisoned in Gitmo - take 'em out and shoot 'em). Bush is to blame for the economy (although as I remember it, the stock market started to nosedive about the time Obama got the nod from the democrats, and really took a dump about the 5th of November - and the housing bubble was entirely due to democrats - including Obama - and the notion that financial acumen shouldn't be a factor in making very large debt commitments ), and "loss of our national self respect".

Personally, I had plenty of respect for our nation, and our flag. As I recall, it was exclusively the left who have a patriotism problem. "Don't question my patriotism" was the refrain for who, exactly? Anyone? Anyone?Buehler?

Now, of course, we hear a cry that we should unite behind the president-elect to heal the country. What was wrong with healing the country (not that the country was sick) when Bush held office?

So, I have two questions for you. Why do they call it the "reality-based" party when democrats demonstrably make up 'facts' out of thin air to support their views, and why, since you are comfortable trading our second amendment rights for socialist welfare and 'international acceptance', are you a gun owner? You know you'd get a lot more respect and acceptance from your party and your transnationalist friends if you'd get rid of those evil firearms - and hey, why not? You're just a hobbyist, right?

I see both views respectable. The politicians are corrupt in general, we all know that. There is more to Sept.11th than the average person acknowledges, and there is more to Obama than the average African American acknowledges. People were crying in the streets because America looked past skin color. Regardless, if people don't stand up for their rights and fight back we are all doomed.

Election Analysis: America Can Take Pride In This Historic, Inspirational Disaster

Although I have not always been the most outspoken advocate of President-Elect Barack Obama, today I would like to congratulate him and add my voice to the millions of fellow citizens who are celebrating his historic and frightening election victory. I don't care whether you are a conservative or a liberal -- when you saw this inspiring young African-American rise to our nation's highest office I hope you felt the same sense of patriotic pride that I experienced, no matter how hard you were hyperventilating with deep existential dread.

Yes, I know there are probably other African-Americans much better qualified and prepared for the presidency. Much, much better qualified. Hundreds, easily, if not thousands, and without any troubling ties to radical lunatics and Chicago mobsters. Gary Coleman comes to mind. But let's not let that distract us from the fact that Mr. Obama's election represents a profound, positive milestone in our country's struggle to overcome its long legacy of racial divisions and bigotry. It reminds us of how far we've come, and it's something everyone in our nation should celebrate in whatever little time we now have left.

Less than fifty years ago, African-Americans were barred from public universities, restaurants, and even drinking fountains in many parts of the country. On Tuesday we came together and transcended that shameful legacy, electing an African-American to the country's top job -- which, in fact, appears to be his first actual job. Certainly, it doesn't mean that racism has disappeared in America, but it is an undeniable mark of progress that a majority of voters no longer consider skin color nor a dangerously gullible naivete as a barrier to the presidency.

It's also heartening to realize that as president Mr. Obama will soon be working hand-in-hand with a former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard like Senator Robert Byrd to craft the incoherent and destructive programs that will plunge the American economy into a nightmare of full-blown sustained depression. As Vice President-Elect Joe Biden has repeatedly warned, there will be difficult times ahead and the programs will not always be popular, or even sane. But as we look out over the wreckage of bankrupt coal companies, nationalized banks, and hyperinflation, we can always look back with sustained pride on the great National Reconciliation of 2008. Call me an optimist, but I like to think when America's breadlines erupt into riots it will be because of our shared starvation, not the differences in our color.

It's obvious that this newfound pride is not confined to Americans alone. All across the world, Mr. Obama's election has helped mend America's tattered image as a racist, violent cowboy, willing to retaliate with bombs at the slightest provocation. The huge outpouring of international support following the election shows that America can still win new friendships while rebuilding its old ones, and provides Mr. Obama with unprecedented diplomatic leverage over our remaining enemies. When Russian tanks start pouring into eastern Europe and Iranian missiles begin raining down on Jerusalem, their leaders will know they will be facing a man who not only conquered America's racial divide but the hearts of the entire Cannes film community. And those Al Qaeda terrorists plotting a dirty nuke or chemical attack on San Francisco face a stark new reality: while they may no longer need to worry about US Marines, they are looking down the barrel of a strongly worded diplomatic condemnation by a Europe fully united in their deep sympathy for surviving Americans.

So for now, let's put politics aside and celebrate this historic milestone. In his famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial 45 years ago, Dr. King said "I have a dream that one day my children will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." Let us now take pride that Tuesday we Americans proved that neither thing matters anymore.

In response to Bush destroying our Military...no, that would have actually been Clinton's fault...anyone remember Bosnia when he publicly announced we were about to run out of Cruise Missles (due in no small part to his underfunding). Or the waste of lives that was Somalia because he didnt have the stomach to do what was right? How about when he knew where Bin Laden was and didnt have him killed? 9-11 was the fault of his appointees mis-management and almost complete destruction of the CIA. Thanks to Bush's appointee the CIA has regrown into a force to be reckoned with and the moral is not in the sh*tter. While our military might be stretched thin at least now we have one. The surge in Iraq is a bad idea and we should pull out now who said that? The O. God help us when he becomes our Commander....

i ususally just set back and read the political debates,and i have read every post in this debate, and i wanted to get my 2cents in this time. in my oppinion the nation that we live in is going to be the same no matter who is elcted into office, we have been slowly loosing our rights since the first president was elected and they call it progress, and we will keep doing so until we are completely enslaved by our political leaders,or until the people of the united states are united again and take a stand myself i dont see this happening. we elected barack obahma into an office that should be held by a true american not a man that calls himself "AFRICAN AMERICAN" i doubt he would even last a day in the africa that he soils the american title with, now i am not saying a word about race i dont care if our president is black ,white ,yellow,or green as long as they feel like they are truly AMERICAN. we can argue the points of his political stands all day long between us its not going to do anything but seperate our people further, until we all stop and take a look at the big picture and see things for what they truly are we are all in bad shape. just like all of the other presidents he will roar and bark at first but in the end he will make no more of a change than what will be allowed, our nation is ran by something much bigger than congress,our political leaders are merely a face to view. i know i will probably get flamed for this post, but at least you read it............

Bingo. The Obama campaign targeted the least-educated and most-disenfranchised segments of the population with a platform that was essentially, "I look like you, and I talk good too!" Frankly, it was a brilliant strategy. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I imagine that there was a sharp increase in both voter registration and turnout within these communities.

Make no mistake, if Mr. Obama were not half-black, he would have never made it past the primaries with his resume (or lack thereof). No intelligent person could have rationally concluded that he was the most-qualified candidate to be the leader of the free world. It's an ugly truth, but a truth nonetheless.
