That is cool. I would love to have one of these beside the bed AND in the truck. I just want to make sure I understand...The short barrel is legal since it was manufactured this way so it’s technically a shot pistol?

We used similar years ago on our entry team.  They were effective breaching tools with breaching rounds.  Ours had Pachmayer pistol grips on them.  They were very hard on the wrist though.  Weren't worth a darn for rabbits or quail though.:D

No, it is simply a "firearm". Neither handgun nor long gun. You could make one yourself if you started with an original pistol grip only "shotgun" of any barrel length, which actually is also an "other firearm", not actually a "long gun". Or from a virgin receiver. Federally, must not be concealed on the person or it reverts to NFA status.

A weapon designed to fire shot shells only can never be a handgun/pistol no matter how configured or by whom.

So I assume there is no tax stamp required but it's best not to carry one around in the truck...

No stamp. I myself certainly wouldn't worry about carrying one in truck in this state. We have no laws that conflict with federal firearm classifications except one, that a "handgun" has "under a 12 barrel".
