Hey guys, new member here.

I am going to be taking the concealed carry class at the end of this month. I've looked all over the state website, and I see it costs $100 for the original permit fee for 8 years.

It also mentions later on something about a $68 background fee, but it never exactly says it is needed for the average person.

So can someone please clarify for me exactly what it will cost me after the class?

Also I see mention of fingerprints, do they do this at the DMV the day you apply or what?

Thanks guys, glad to have found this place!

My wife just went through the process. Costs were as I recollect... $50-$75 for safety class. She found a Group on coupon that saved some. It was for Shooters Depot in Chattanooga. Course cost was I think $50 after the discount.

$100 at DMV after the safety class paid at DMV when they take your photo. They will also set up an appt for you at a fingerprint vendor. In her case it was a ups store.

Now the wait... let me know if you have questions. I'll try to help.

Awesome, thanks for the reply.

So just 100 bucks at DMV, no additional fee for a background check or anything?

I'm also going to be using Shooters Depot so Ill have to check for a Groupon.

Where did you "hear" that?  Everybody gets the same background check, but no extra charge.

On there it says "The current fee to run  background checks is $68 so that is what the applicant must pay."

It is under the section talking about military folks. The way it worded it I thought it may mean everyone had to pay that for a background check. Wouldn't surprise me for them to tack on any extra fees they could.

Understandable question; the fee is all inclusive, The DMV collects the admin fee for the State, the BG check is by the TBI, a State agency. I was also under the impression when I got mine...its been a minute, that there was an admin  fee, a BG fee, and one for the fingerprints.

As I currently understand it, the fee for Veterans with documented proof of marksmanship activity (I.E. marksmanship award documented on DD214 or other qualification document) is $68. My thoughts on the permit process have evolved considerably since the unfortunate thread six years ago; I am a drilling Navy Reservist assigned to Navy Operational Support Center Chattanooga and have been assigned there since 2012. Getting mine as soon as I have 68 dollars with no other purpose in life.

The total fee for non-veterans is $100 for an 8-year permit.  This includes the background check and fingerprinting.

For veterans (no marksmanship certification required, just honorable service on their DD-214 or a current ID card) is for the "background check only" at $68.  Veterans get the a break on the rest of the usual $100 fee for their initial 8-year permit.

If veterans want to forego the firing test for the class, they must produce proof of acceptable training while in the military.  The Handgun Unit's website addresses this, but they haven't told the schools what to look for to mark "pass" on the firing phase, so as of today (11/27/2017) veterans will still have to complete both the written test and firing test in order to get a pass/pass for the class.  In a recent class one veteran said, "The firing test is the best part of the class.  Why would I want to forego it?".
