do you carry at home...part II

Recommended Posts

About 25 years ago, while stationed aboard a ship home-ported in Norfolk, I shared a small apartment with a shipmate. We were both E-4's, thus what we could afford to rent was definitely "wrong side of the tracks".

Room-mate answers a knock on the door one evening - the first guy that came through first didn't say a word, just cold-cocked him with a wrench. I had a clear line of sight, standing in the other room, and ducked into the closet to grab a pistol. Maybe had to move three feet. By the time I turned around with the pistol in my hand, the guy was in my face with the wrench cocked back for a strike. After an hour or so (okay, maybe 5 seconds) he and his two buddies decided it wasn't their night and took off, leaving a door with a busted chain, and a groggy room-mate still on the deck.

Why didn't I shoot? The pistol (a real POS .380) was broken. It always stovepiped. I'd have gotten the first one, but his buddies would've killed me.

I swapped that POS (with full disclosure) for a pump shotgun asap.

Do I carry at home? Unless I'm sleeping, drinking or in the shower. Even then there is a shotgun within 15 feet or so.

I remember that apartment!

hey, speaking of Pete, have you heard from him lately??

+1 Certain parts, well, most parts of Norfolk are real sh*tholes and yep, me being the E4 lived in one of them. Lots of interesting ethnic folk were around. Fortunately I never really had any trouble. Only had a couple folks give me the stink eye.

A female in Oak Ridge, Rarity Ridge to be exact, was walking her dogs, when she was attacked by a pack of wild dogs. The wild dogs were trying to get to her little doggies, and she got in the way. She has a permit and normally carries, she later told me " I didn't carry my gun because this is a good neighborhood, and nothing ever happens here." This is as good a reason to carry everywhere. If I am working on the car, or watching my son ride his dirtbike in the yard, bet money there is a gun on my person.

Not if but what.

Glad this thread happened cause I don't feel like such a wierdo for slipping the 905 in my bathrobe pocket.

Unless I'm in the shower I'm carrying. At night one or two are right by the bed.

Right, bad things can happen even in "good neighborhoods". Felons are just as mobile as wild dogs, or more so,

I hated Norfolk with a passion. I was on a gator out of Little Creek in the 80s and again in the early 90s.

Just take your Glock in the shower with you. If you can wash it in the dishwasher, a warm shower should be nice an relaxing for the sweet thing.

Tonight at dinner, my family had a discussion on this topic. What brought it on was talking about our family business. My in laws own a market and deli here where we live. My son stated that he saw a couple of wanna be thugs hanging out there tonight. This concerns me because of the economy. People are going to get desperate and soon. The discussion went to "do we need a handgun behind the counter?" I told him that if someone comes in to rob the place, give them whatever they want and live for another day. Then we got to " but daddy, you carry a gun all the time". My response went like this. If we are ever in danger from a mad person spraying bullets in Walmart or a restaurant or anywhere, my main priority is get my family to safety and fast. Then and only then would I try to stop this person. My son said "why would you not just start shooting as soon as it happened?" Legal issues are a big concern but my family's safety is first. I explained to him that even though I may shoot the guy and stop the mayhem, what if I missed and hit that 8 yr old behind him? He understood better then. I told the family that even though folks may have a CCW permit, if they are not prepared to use it when necessary, they don't need one period. And if they are not properly trained, they really don't need one. As for the family business, we have discussed a weapon behind the counter, but if a bad guy gets behind there, well...he has a new gun. And hopefully he wouldn't turn it on our employees. Be prepared with training, information, and learn to shoot accurately and safely. I pray nothing ever happens where I would have to draw my weapon and respond.

I'll put it this way: the only time I am not carrying is when I am on the UTK campus. Since I am in college, I am too broke to eat at a restaurant that serves alcohol; I hate kids, so I stay away from parks and schools; I usually avoid doing business with places that would rather see me dead than defended; and the Military ID usually prevents me from having to go to court when I get pulled. B)

Call me paranoid, but after you have had to put a round of shot through a cretin at 0400 headed to your kid sister's bedroom after he drew a Beretta on you, you learn not to take the right to carry for granted again.

Tender, frigate and a carrier for me, and the apartment was just north of Littlecreek and Shore Drive intersection.

I lived on Chesapeake Blvd just a couple blocks south of where it hits E. Little Creek.

Well, I kept up a long distance romance wid a gal in Nawfuk for a number of years...had many a very nice time in the Ghent area...

Although I admit I didn't like the Norfolk/Portsmouth/Etc area in general. Too crowded and expensive.

I think this should be the prayer of anyone with a HCP/CCP.

Just my  though.

I'm all for your right to carry and all, but you're carrying a loaded gun around on you at 19? Not very responsible or smart.

You realize if you ever have to use it you could be facing some serious legal issues right? Like a murder charge potentially?

I think you should be able to carry at 18, but that is another debate we have already had in other threads.....lol

Yea. I'm still 60/40 on it, but I'm just calling into question the issue of breaking the law. I know it's being debated in the other thread, but it seems iffy to me.

I hear ya, and yes the legailty of someone under 21 carrying in TN on an out of state permit is being debated. But what I meant is I think the law in TN should allow 18 year olds to carry, and that topic has been debated in the past.

Highly understood, but like I said on the other thread, I have found zero laws stating that my carrying with 2 CCP's honored by TN is illegal since I am only 19. Now if Bredesen were to sign a law stating that I couldn't do that, then the gun would stay in my house no questions asked...until I turned 21 at least.

'Course, you can only shoot 3 out of 4...
...until that politician comes to take my guns. It might just become a justifiable threat against my person. :D
