If 7.62x54r doesn't make enough noise for you, buy one of the carbine models ...

Most Nagant aficionados only use Nagant when referring to the revolver. I' m not one but I have read this on other forums and my guess is he's referring to this or one of it's variants.

7.62X38mmR

But then I find this.

Rarely does the phrase "Lets take a gun the Russians made at wartime and make it better" cross anyone's lips. Or at least I think that way.

From a totally amateur point of view:

1.The .45 APC bullet diameter is 0.451 in v. the 7.62x54R bullet diameter is 0.312 in. So you would have to bore out or replace the barrel. Replacing it would probably mean having a custom barrel made.

2. The .45 APC case length is 1.275 in v. the 7.62x54R whose case length is 3.038 in. So you would have to re-work the entire internal magazine somehow.

3. The .45 APC is a "rimless" straight case v. the 7.62x54R whose case is a "rimmed" bottlenecked. You would have to account for this in the new feeding and bolt catch/extraction mechanics.

So basically after all this, you are only left with a base receiver and (probably modified) stock. Better to just get a repro Thompson and be done with it.

And MP5_Rizzo, from my experience using just Mosin refers to the rifle. That is one crazy conversion you linked to.

You are correct, just Mosin refers to rifle.  Mosin Nagant or just Nagant, pistol.  The Thread topic says Mosin Nagant.

Well I don't read titles..:wall:.. Actually I just read the body of the post and skimmed the title I guess. Trying to do too much at once and still keep up with TGO. lol

I have heard all manner of mixes of this from "lay people", but none from anyone who actually deals with these guns much.

Rhineland arms used to make a 45 ACP conversion for Mausers. It was cheap too, something like $200 for everything including the barrel.

Here you go, $160 and that includes the magazine well to accept 1911 magazines.

At first I thought you would really have to have run out of useless projects to do this but then I saw 450 Bushmaster.  That kind of made it interesting all of a sudden.

Nope, Mosin Nagant refers solely to the rifle as well.  The revolver is simply the Nagant ...

It might be rare, but the Finns did just this ...

I've got several $100 or less barreled action Mausers I picked up here and there and just haven't gotten my round tuit to do anything with but now this thread has my gears churning.

Well you just might need to share one. LOL How much do you figure you could get them completed for without the kit?

I haven't put much thought or research into them recently so I have no idea.  I know one is originally chambered in 6.5 X 55 Swiss and 2 I'm not sure but I'm think 7mm Mauser.  I just found the 6.5 and it's stamped on the barrel. Still looking for the other two and that could take hours or days.

Your organization system sounds a lot like mine.

I see a local guys selling a sporterized 7mm Spanish Mauser for $175. I see on the kit site that the Spanish ones require bolt modification, so it might be a one way conversion. i would prefer to be able to convert it back to the 7mm in the future is I wanted.

@Dolomite_Supafly Have you ever done one of these?

1. As far as a barrel goes. Barrel blanks in .451 bore diameter are available.

2. I'm aware of the differences in cartridge length too. Several cartridges have been chambered in Mosins. Magazines have been reshaped and reworked too.

3. The rim can be reworked too. Rimless cartridges have been used before. Bannerman used the .30-06. The extractor would have to be reworked.

4. Have you priced a repro Thompson?

Like I said 1-3 was my amateur opinion. No warranty given. LOL

#4 Yes, but my Dad has a Volunteer Arms Thompson clone, so I got lucky.

I'm in the slow process of integral supressor build with one of these kits on a Spanish Mauser. Will be epic upon completion.

stamps here, donor rifle & conversion kit. Just gotta build the supressor.

These Mauser .45acp conversions remind me of the old Spanish Destroyer carbine in 9mm Largo. I actually think they'd make a decent 100 yard pick up truck gun.

My understanding is that the revolver is simply the 'Nagant revolver' for a very good reason - Mosin had nothing to do with it.  Leon Nagant alone was responsible for designing the revolver.
