I went to high school with a black guy that was super racist against other blacks when he missed his meds. He was yelling slurs out my car window in Gatlinburg one time. That was the last time I agreed to drive him home.

I've sort of come to the conclusion that lower Broadway is a chariacture of everything. Nothing you see there is authentic.  

I live about 7 miles from there and almost never go down there.  Recently I took my kids to a birthday party that was happening at a restaurant down there.  After walking down lower Broad, my six year old looked at me and said, "Dad, what was that place?"

Haha. I agree with you there. Amusingly enough, I have some folks on social media platforms who actually know this gent. He apparently ran with a neo nazi crew in the 90s. So whatever his story is, I bet it is an interesting one.

Lower Broadway is trying very hard to be a small Gatlinburg cause nothing in Gatlinburg is authentic either. It's all for the tourists cause most of them don't know any different................JMHO

Does anyone know when the first honky tonks started up on Broadway? I know they were there in the late 80s/early 90s, but I don't know how long before then. I don't think they were there back in the 60s. My in-laws talk about going downtown to Cain-Sloan and Harvey's, and to some of the furniture places on Broadway. I've also seen some PBS specials on old Nashville in the 1950s and 60s and I don't think I saw any of the 'tonks then.

I couldn't agree more.  Occasionally  I have a customer or coworker from out of town that we have to entertain and they want to go to the Lower Broad/2nd Avenue area, but that is not Nashville.  If someone wants the real experience, I will take them to the Bluebird or Station Inn.

I was in VA for Cooter's Last Stand end of July, Dukes of Hazzard event. Lots of black folk sporting the stars and bars. You have to spend time with them to get it.

I could never begin to speak with the eloquence about the history these men revere. Chuck, you're just plain off base. But anyone would be, without personal interactions.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Printers Alley which is all clubs and bars and many of the older Country stars owned clubs in the alley. It has been around since the mid 40's!!! Those clubs were open for business long before lower Broadway became a Honky Tonk Strip...................

I really wish y'all could listen to Ben Jones (Cooter) speak on the history and heritage. He's also a lifelong democrat, a retired congressman, and never in his life voted republican until he voted for Trump. At 76, he sees the true enemy clearly.

I could be wrong but I doubt the swastika represent nazis to him. He might have hung around with bikers at some point. Bikers were sporting swastikas long before skin heads. It seemed to be more of a slap at society than a hatred of any racial group.

I never have enjoyed going to Lower Broadway as a tourist but when I worked down there as a bouncer and doorman there is nothing better in the world than people watching for 10 or 12 hours on a Friday or Saturday night
