So what would you do?

Not really a gun related thread. So I'm pretty much in a dead end job. I've been told there will not be any raises this year at my job, which if I stayed would mean I probably wouldn't get any increase in pay until at least my 2 yr mark since I'm still making the same wage I was hired at a year ago. I've pretty much exhausted the job search in this area. My brother-in-law is an electrical contractor and has said the money is pretty good. They just bought a really nice house. He told me that he would hire me if I moved out near them. The catch, of course, is that they live in sunny Kalifornia just a wee bit north of San Francisco. If I wasn't a self proclaimed gun nut and a conservative, I wouldn't hesitate to take him up on his offer, however, I am. I'm not sure on the procedure of moving to CA with guns but I'm sure its a PITA. I would have to buy restricted cap mags and my beloved AK would have to go bye bye. Not to mention not having the ability to carry a firearm since I'm sure that area is one of the ones where its impossible to get a permit. He first offered it to me last spring and at that point I thought hell no. But now.... I'm considering it, as much as it pains me to say it. Not sure why I'm writing all this, maybe just need some confirmation that I'm not the only person alive thats hesitant to live under the KaliBan... :P

To add: I've done a bit of research and apparently if you are moving into CA, you can bring your handguns with you even if they aren't on the CA DoJ list. You just have to buy low cap mags. The AK is still a no-go though. :screwy: I guess the "List" is only for purchasing new guns from a dealer.

Brandon, lets meet tomorrow at lunch and I'll slap you up side your head. Don't do it. There has got to be work between here and Kalifornia that you can find. If you move out near them, what is the cost of living, never mind the cost to your soul.

Tough decision. My job is not going much of anywhere either, plus at times I feel I need a new environment. However I have been looking more at TX, would be hard to go to such a restrictive state as CA, but sometimes you got to do what you got to do.

More money is not always more living!

I do agree, but living quite literally paycheck to paycheck has gotten very very old.

Cost of living is gigantic no doubt. They live in Napa which is like yuppy paradise.

Yeah, I've been looking but haven't come across much. The thing about going to CA is I have family there and would be guaranteed a job, so I dunno. Lots to consider.

No shame in letting a close friend or family hold on to your arsenal while you go get experience as an electrical contractor, then you could move anywhere you like, and be your own boss. Sometimes you've got to sacrifice to grab a good opportunity and make something of it.

Yeah, the lovely part of that is all my family out here in TN is uber liberal. I'm certain I'm the only one that voted against the Obamessiah.

You know I just remembered that stupid microstamp law. My guns would be illegal anyhow once that takes effect.

Hey, surely a TGO'er could hang on to them for you... that is, IF they could be trusted :P

Well, things might be pretty grim everywhere in US next few years, even in Kali wid your bro's biz.

Let's see, you're young. And single, right?

What did you do in the service?

Did you hate it?

Considered reenlisting, maybe training for something useful?

Who won the '57 World Series?

Oh yeah, might I mention, I've been considering moving out to CA as well... my brother lives there, and seems to think he can score me a job.

He does live in SoCal though, which is much more conservative than one would generally associate with CA... Large military population, lots of defense industries, and real estate moguls...

You got a safe? Rent a storage building, pay for it 1 year in advance put your safe in there, locked up tight. I would go with one that had "security" gated or something. Of if you have some good friends you might be able to store it in their basement while you are in communist block county.

Considered reenlisting, maybe training for something useful? Not gonna reenlist again. As far as training for something useful, yeah I'd love to but where I am right now just isn't easily doable.

Who won the '57 World Series? Did they have baseball back then??

Yeah I heard some parts of CA are pretty conservative. I'm quite certain none of those are near the Bay area.

Man, I'd rather stay in TN and live in a dumpy trailer from paycheck to paycheck than move to CA and live in a mansion.

I hear Coal Creek is hiring.....

bkelm18,

My father is a manager at a steel mill in Mississippi. He hires a ton of guys who were electricians on boomers. He loves them. Think about it or PM me.

PS

I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in SoCal for three years and even though it is in THE only republican county in the state it still sucks for gun owners. Women are good out there, but they are better in this part of the county, the cost of living SUCKS out there and you have to put up with WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more tree huggers.........synopsis...great place to visit, but you couldn't pay me enough to live there again!!

You are young, hang on to what you got. beans and rice, rice and beans till you don't owe squat. It's going to get worse 'fore it gets better.

Although you may not have the best job, be thankful for the one you do have.

If it were me, I'd stay right where you're at. Trust me, you're not the only one to miss out on a raise, and many of us will likely miss out on another raise this year. I don't like the fact that I won't see any extra money for a year or three, but I'm more than thankful to see any money at all.

With all the people losing their jobs, unable to find another one, I'd be scared to death to make such a move right now. Just because your brother-in-laws company seems to be doing well today, that's hardly any guarantee it will be doing well tomorrow. Just think about all the people who leave their job one day, thinking everything is fine and dandy, only to show up the next day to find chains on the doors.

Count your blessings, my friend.

Best of luck with whatever decision you make.

All very good points and I agree with every one of them. However, its just not cut and dry. At my current level of income it will take me several years to pay off my debt (my very low amount of debt), yet I have a standing job offer and a guarantee to make twice what I am making now. My BIL's company has grown over the last year and has not laid anyone off. On the other hand, the place where I work has effectively downsized and has taken huge financial hits. True, just because he is doing good now, doesn't mean it could change tomorrow. Same could be said about my current employer. I could walk in today and they tell me I'm out. Who knows. I'll probably mull it over for a couple months and see where the economy is heading. :D

You might make twice what you are now, but the cost of living is more if not twice of what it is in our area. Would need to check with the BIL and look at what apartment/housing rents are and food prices, and gas, and...everything.

The economy that we are in is not going to last forever, Obama takes office next week and it is all going to be good.......ok that's a BS statement, but anyway, the economy is going to be like it is today maybe a little worse, maybe a little better (probably both, will fluctuate up and down) for most of this upcoming year. I hear from the financial industry friends that they are looking at the economy growing by the 3rd quarter and on into 2010 coming out of the recession. Of course these are opinions, but they are from people that are in the industries that track this sorta stuff. We will see of course. A downturn in the economy is a normal occurance. It goes through periods of up times and periods of down times, this one is a very bad downturn but it is "normal" in the fact that it happens.

So my advice, think about it, study up on the costs of living out there, compared to the increase of pay and see how it works out. You will have to give up things if you go out there, but look at what you will gain with the experience. You might get out there, hate it, gain great experience, the economy comes back, then move back to TN with some great marketable skills. Tough decision, you are young and single, so you can take chances, do what is best for you. Good luck!

Go East, young man? Californians look for the exit.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090112/ap_on_re_us/fleeing_california_3

There unemployment rate was third in the nation in November.

I've heard this article (maybe others like it) on several conservative talk shows (Phil Valentine last night).

You don't want to go to Kalifornia. You'll loose more than you guns there.

Probably scar you for life, too.

I heard the electrical trade was good in Pennsylvania at one time.

Don't know anything about their gun laws, but might be worth checking into.
