Why do I need an AK-47?

Recommended Posts

Congrats on the new blaster. I hope you have a lot of fun with it...

I have 7.62x39 covered with an sks. I'm not as fast reloading it but I have a TON of stripper clips. If I need a heavy piston fired gun I have my Sig 5.56. You could beat the terminator to death with it and still fire thousands of rounds with no stoppages.

I was on my third or fourth carbine class before I touched an AR. The instructor got tired of trying to set up malfunction drills on the sig and made me run them with his rifle. I about dropped it because it was so light. That sealed the deal for me.

Wife and I have 300blk pistols set up for home defense and travel guns. Love the sound of heavy subs cycling through a suppressor.

I will be curious to read your range report. For $599 it might be a good idea to pick up one for practice drills.

Well that quote got all messed up, but someone claimed AKs suck past 200. Uh,no they do just fine. :-)

That was me.  And I think these will explain my thoughts on such.

Yes, it has about double the bullet drop at 300 yards if you compare it to M193 with a 100 yard zero (which is what the chart above is). But it's still an easy hold over. I was actually shooting 7.62 x 39 at 300 yards with iron sights a couple weeks ago and was able to get consistent hits on a steel ringer. I think the round has a bad rap due to internet rumors that people read and run with. Past 300, yeah I'd much rather use 5.56 if we're talking carbines.

I carry an AK everywhere, it is my self defense gun. I am not so much worried that I will need it when I am out and about. I am worried about coming home to an intruder inside my house. And it is safe to assume that if they are in my house they are at least armed as well as I am.

The reason why people say AKs are inaccurate is because they are generally fed crappy ammunition while people who own ARs generally use better quality ammunition. If you feed an AR Tula or Wolf it will be comparable to an AK using the same ammunition.

I have videos of the Afghans who worked for me using 1980's vintage AKs to hit man sized steel targets at 300+ yards consistently. As in 7 out of 10 consistently. They are plenty accurate for a fighting rifle regardless of what you feed them.

My first AK arrived on Friday.  I had a chance to take it to the range yesterday and put a few mags of Golden Tiger through it.  It's an exceptionally good rifle!  The front sight post is true, the fit and finish of the rifle seem excellent, and it went "bang" every time I pulled the trigger.

As you all predicted, I doubt this will be my only or last AK.  The more that I read on the history of them and of Mikhail Kalashnikov, the more interested I become.

Here's a little pre-shooting pornography for you...

Glad you enjoy shooting it.  Should make your next one a beat up wood stock or underfolder...or get it new and wear it in yourself, that works too.

Just weird seeing an all black AK with Magpul furniture added.  Kind of like an already perfect small town square that didn't need five extra strip malls surrounding it.

He's gonna dip it in some mud :)

The AK 47 in its Russian version (airborne is preferred) is a simple reliable weapon. in 1973 I found one after 4 months in the dirt of Suez canal. it was rusted. full of mud. I washed it in the canal. it was loaded. cocked and bullet in the chamber. it operated like new with its original muddy magazine. auto and single shots

That's a weird comparison.  It's kind of like saying "No, that woman is too attractive.  I'd rather have the frumpy one with a lot of cats." :)

Plastic Magpul parts on an AK = cats.

Glad we agree. :P

You could always go Plum to be more authentically tacticool. I like the magpul furniture it makes the gun better. Here is a visual cluster......plum and black furniture, blue sofa, green pillow and red wall......
