Why do I need an AK-47?

I like the variety of posts here.

For me, I was looking for what I hoped would be the right truck gun. 7.62x39 had comparatively unique and compelling ballistics.

This is what I found:

What makes the 7.62x39 so great to me is that it holds it's energy better than other rifle calibers when fired through shorter barrels.

You can still have muzzle velocities around 2000fps through a 7.5" barrel. That's impressive.

I own the IWI Galil ACE pistol and I love it. I bought a Draco pistol as well.

You made a great choice and I'll be curious to hear your update after you take it out.

What makes it great to me is that ammo is barely more expensive than 22 lr, yet you KNOW you shot something when you pull the trigger.

Then, there's 300 Blackout.

How can you own and run a gun forum without an AK-47 is the real question?  Glad you ordered one so we don't have to answer that question. Congratulations. Looks like a nice piece. I just purchased another AK-47 Yugo Underfolder the other day. One cannot have too many guns of any caliber.

Man! How did I forget to add 300 Black?!

I have actually been criticized for owning 300 Blk. Limited use and all.

It was my first AR. I felt like it was an ideal home defense choice and it got my first suppressor.

I prefer it in pistol length and have 2 set up for CQB.

I'm guilty of spending a good bit on accessories and I'm glad to see that market is growing for the AK.

LOL, I know right?  I just never pulled the trigger on them.  For the longest time I could have picked up an Arsenal AK for about the same price as the PSA, but then Sandy Hook happened and the whole damn thing came apart.  I guess I finally decided that enough was enough. :)

Congratulations on the AK Tungsten! I believe the Palmetto "American AK" is a direct bi-product off their acquisition of TN AK manufacturer DDI. DDI built a solid reputation for building quality AK variants off Hungarian parts kits. Like all American AK manufacturers as proper commie parts kits availability has become more constraining they have been working towards building a quality 100% US made AK. The communist oppressors have a 60 year head start on us in development and manufacturing processes but the more we support a demand for quality AKs made by american hands the better they will become. As far as training and ancillary gear for the AK, if you are firmly invested in the AR then the AK will give you nothing that a quality 5.56 or 300blk AR wont do as well or better(and slightly lighter) without the investment in gear. Well, that is without the Mongo simple AK nomenclature and mythical apocalypse ready reliability. Enjoy the new toy! Fair warning though the next morning after your first AK range session may make you feel a little dirty like a vegas escort happened to follow you up to your hotel room from the casino.....lol

Yep. With all its good attributes, it's tough to justify the AK just on Ballistics. A 300 blackout can be loaded to about the same. Ammo cost isn't bad either if you load with converted 223 brass.

There's an AK in my future too BTW. I just can't say when.

A huge advantage 300 Blackout has over 7.62x39 is its ability to run heavy subsonic loads. Out of the same magazine you can run subsonic and supersonic loads. But supersonic loads are comparable to the 7.62x39.

I designed the heaviest cast bullet for the 300 Blackout. It is a 265 grain monster that is stable in typical 300 Blackout twists. Powder fill has been optimized for powders typically used for the 300 Blackout. It will feed from a magazine. And because it was optimized for the 300 Blackout accuracy is also great. It lets you use ~25% less powder. And because you use less powder that means less gas and less gas means your silenced gun is quieter.

I carry an AK every time I leave my house and have one close at all times. It is the platform I grab when things get serious. I carried ARs for both work and play for most of my adult life but feel the AK is better suited than an AR for me.

Show me some 300 blk ammo for 20 cents a pop and I'm all in.

Gotta ask Dolomite about that one. He's the cheap blackout king. I always pay too much :) I have a bunch of blackout loaded with 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. They're 40 cents. They DO go where you point em real good.

If you cast you own bullets you will have less than 15 cents per round for supersonic loads and under a dime a shot for subsonic loads. I got some components on sale and loaded subsonic loads for 4.4 cents per round and supersonic for 7.3 cents a round but that was a few years ago.

Take that, Mr. 20 cent! :)

Why do I need an AK-47?   It's a pretty simple question, really.  I think I want one, but I am not really sure why.

I have always owned AR platform rifles.  All of my gear is for the AR platform.  I have been tempted by the AK many times over the years but never dipped my toes into those waters.  I have only shot a handful of them over the past two decades.  But, again, I think that maybe I want one.

Like a lot of folks, I was ready to buy one last October as we ran up toward the election, but then I breathed a sigh of relief when Hillary was kept out of office.

Talk me into or out of this. :)

You don't. Buy a few dozen Mosins instead ...

I'm glad to hear you've joined the AK crowd David.

I wonder just how many of us were honestly influenced by this?  ;)

[quote post="1452108" timestamp="150Yes, 7.62x39 starts to suck fast past about 200yds, but who's ever going to need that in a real world scenario here in the US?

Well that quote got all messed up, but someone claimed AKs suck past 200. Uh,no they do just fine. :-)

Y'all are probably gonna call me all kinds of nasty names. But I'll tell you anyway.

In my late friends collection there was a like new Romanian SAR-1, a bunch of extra mags and about 8000 rounds of ammo. I could have had that rifle dirt cheap. Hell, his wife very likely would have just given it to me. I could have been set up with an AK and ammo for life. I seriously considered it. I must have picked up that rifle about a dozen times, handled it, pointed it, etc. I know its a fine weapon. It has a great reputation, fires a decent cartridge and is battle proven. In the end, there's just something about the AK that just doesn't "do it" for me. I'm not even sure why. So I let it go to some one else. BTW: I know the guy who bought it and he's tickled plumb to pieces with it.

I've mentioned before that I don't care for the AR type rifles at all. Maybe I'm just an old fart too set in my ways. I guess if the world ever really does go to hell, I'll just have to muddle through with these.
