Why do I need an AK-47?

Why do I need an AK-47?   It's a pretty simple question, really.  I think I want one, but I am not really sure why.

I have always owned AR platform rifles.  All of my gear is for the AR platform.  I have been tempted by the AK many times over the years but never dipped my toes into those waters.  I have only shot a handful of them over the past two decades.  But, again, I think that maybe I want one.

Like a lot of folks, I was ready to buy one last October as we ran up toward the election, but then I breathed a sigh of relief when Hillary was kept out of office.

Talk me into or out of this. :)

Just do it, yes YOU NEED IT ......and a pistol version....

People will make fun of you and talk behind your back if they find out you don't own one or two....

You need to take a more optimistic approach and ask yourself why you don't need an AK. I'm sure you will find the list nonexistent.

Because it's a classic.

I'm helping a neighbor build his first ak here in a couple weeks. He finally decided he wanted another but didn't want to buy.

As you said Hillary didn’t get elected. Nearly a grand (or more) for an AK? I don’t think so. Do you have a good AR10?

Do you base all your firearm purchases on a need basis?  If you want something and have the financial abilty to acquire it, then do it.  If the new whatever turns out not being what you really thought it was going to be, turn it into something else.

Paid $599 shipped for a "blem" PSA AK-47 "Moekov".  Regularly $730.

That’s a good price. I’m trying to hold off on ordering an AR pistol. But I’m not very good at that.

Just one AK is a lonely AK... just sayin' :)

I have never been against them, but have always just hung with the AR platform. I have a good pile of those. Looks like a good choice. Being an AR guy, I would grab one with a fold-over stock too.

Since we're already on the topic... does anyone know how customizable an AK can be?

How much do you want to spend?  Joking aside, customizable, but not to the point or ease an AR is.

I'm going to get an AK-47 someday, just being stingy with money currently.  I want the "classic" look one though.  Either an old beat up wood stock, or the under folder.

Aside from the collection itch it scratches, it's quite possibly the most practical rifle for all contingencies.  Fantastic yet simple mechanics in operation, that you can drag through the mud and still put rounds downrange.  The ammo is good in punch without being prohibitively expensive to stock up on or too bulky to carry in large qualities.  Yes, 7.62x39 starts to suck fast past about 200yds, but who's ever going to need that in a real world scenario here in the US?

I love ARs.  They'll always be my primary go-to...but the AK will be ready if they ever go down or I can't get parts.  Just as soon as I get one anyway. :P
