Thought this was a good video showing how shooting at the ground can cause rounds to easily clear a berm and leave the range. Proves that bullets don't just burrow into the ground.

I will agree about shooting into the berm, he was shooting in the hard pack ground of the west. Ground there is hard as rock, easy to get a round to skip. Not so in the grass and soft dirt we have here. Now I have had some skip if shooting at a shallow angle. I chased a scope hitting the target all over the place, till I walked up to the target and saw the grass and dirt cut by the skips. All said just be careful and aim well.

Very good video for people to be aware of when setting up ranges.

When units would set up ranges on bases in Iraq and Afghanistan for test firing and confirming/re-establishing zeros, the size of the backstops were something constantly evaluated to make sure we weren't sending stray rounds out of the base and into nearby areas (this happened a few times in Baghdad).  The division master gunner was even tasked to make inspections to ensure everything was within tolerance.
