For what its worth, I heard a report on the news yesterday on AM1510 saying that Williams has said his biggest priorities for this session will be reforming abortion laws and gun issues. There may be some hope yet.

On the other hand, did anyone see this yet? http://www.tennessean.com/article/20090120/NEWS01/90120047

By ERIK SCHELZIG

Associated Press Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- New Tennessee House Speaker Kent Williams has indicated that abortion restrictions and gun rights issues will be at the top of his agenda this legislative session.

The Elizabethton Republican was the surprise winner of the chamber's top post last week when he was joined by all 49 Democrats to beat House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower of Bristol by one vote.

He immediately announced he wanted to quickly pass a long-stalled measure to restrict access to abortions and to expand the areas where people with handgun permits can carry weapons.

Those measures had previously been killed in House subcommittees controlled by Democrats.

With only one term behind him, there are few clues what other issues might drive his agenda.

"expand the areas where people with handgun permits can carry weapons"

I don't care how he obtained the position if he can do this. He will be my "The One" if he can get us into restaurants and public parks.

I agree I really don't care who's the Speaker House as long as they do what the people want not what he wants (unless its what the people want) and is a Republican

Can't see where it really matters what the person calls him/her self, so long as they're doing all that other stuff you mention...

Elephant, jackass, or something in between... it's all the same to me so long as they do their job, and do it properly.

I disagree, of course I hope that our rights to carry gets expanded and common sense prevails, but from what this guy has shown about his character, (a manipulative, backstabbing, do what he can to promote himself and damn the rest of you, even those in my own party) his word is worthless, and to me, that says a lot about a person and this guys word is ....as I said worthless.

Like I said, I hope that our rights are expanded, I will not complain if they are expanded, but I am cautious about at what cost. What will be passed as well, will he cave, will he give in if it is in "his" best interest.

This guy seems like he is the type that when you shake his hand, you lead him in front of you, because if you don't, he is going to steal your wallet.

Db99wj... do you remember that old joke about how you can tell a politician is lying?

The fact is, I've met a lot of politicians, but never one I would call an honest man ( or woman). Given that, the best I'm hoping for is a lying, cheating, thieving S.O.B. that'll lie, cheat and steal for me and not from me.

That's an absurd generalization and mischaracterization of a group of people.

There are many honest, sincere, principled people elected to office across this country. You allow what is some bad, maybe even quite a few bad to disparage an entire group.

I could just as easily say, you know how to tell if a cop is a power hungry, gun grabbing stoolie on the take, they have a badge. And base it on the actions of say the New Orleans PD to suggest that represents every cop in the nation.

I would like to hear his responce as to why he went to the dems in the first place. He should have to refund the donations to his election efforts. As far as his resturant boycotting would get his attention but it would also hurt his wife and kids who didn't have a dog in this race and are most likely hiding their faces anyway this morning. Myself I will most likely not visit his resturant and I'm sure people in Elizabethton will let him know how they feel.

horse puckey!

the children? perhaps they aren't culpable..but guess what? if YOU make bad decisions, YOUR family is put to hard days.

wtf makes that lying, unethical snake in the grass any different? why SHOULDN'T his family suffer for his decisions? They are also his responsibility..and he should have thought of THEM before he acted in an unethical manner.

Every day, I work..as the rest of you guys and girls, with my FAMILY in mind. I know that my decisions and actions will affect them...so I try very hard to act and speak in such a manner as to make my position clear and to ensure that they will be safe and prosperous.

were I to tell my employer to go fly a kite, guess who suffers?

this man should be held accountable for his actions and if his family suffers, while that's a shame..it also doesn't bother me that much...simply because I know that 1. the wife probably KNEW about this and 2. HE IS TEACHING HIS CHILDREN that it's ok to be unethical..

so! NOW should his family get a free pass?

I realize we are in the age of Grace but this event kept popping into my mind.

Jos 7:20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, "Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I have done:

Jos 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it." ....

Jos 7:24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor.

Jos 7:25 And Joshua said, "Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day." So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.

Sin has a consequence that goes a lot farther than we expect. We do not know how this sin is going to impact his life, his childrens life, his wifes life and the influence he has over others but we have seen how it has effected those like him. Wouldn't surprise me to find a lot more trouble in his sphere of influence in the future. Gal chapter 6:7-8

Its up to the citizens of his county to take action. We can help but not lead the charge. Boycott his business and/or go in order a coke and take up tables. Eat real real real slow, like for hrs, but tip the servers well as they are trying to earn a living BUT kill his income. The economy is in the toilet so it wouldn't take long to shut him down.
