Decision between two 9mm's...help me decide!

Hey guys,

I'm looking to add a 9mm to the lineup, and I know there are a billion choices out there. But based on budget and and a few other variables I am looking at a couple different models.

The first is the Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm. It holds 18 rounds and is a bit larger than my Taurus PT145 which I plan to use for CCW.

The other is the Smith & Wesson SW9VE which holds 17 rounds and is more compact than the Taurus.

I've gathered that a lot of people are down on Taurus based on past experiences, but I own one and absolutely love it. It's been flawless and I have no plans to change it out anytime soon. I do not have any experience with S&W yet but I know they have a great rep. Anyone have any sage words of advice on these two firearms?

Thanks!

Well, you can count me in as a Taurus fan. I like how the 24/7 feels in the hand. Never shot the Taurus or the S&W but I say try and fondle some and go from there. If you've had good experience from Taurus, I say go with the 24/7.

As much as it pains me to say it, I agree with EBD... and I don't like Taurus guns. If it were me, I'd wait and save another $100 or so and get an S&W M&P9. Have you checked out the CZ75, too?

I had a Sigma in .40 and would have another, but most folks don't like the heavy (like 12lb) trigger and spongy action, although my gun was incredibly accurate. The only gun I've shot tighter groups with is my 19-3 Combat Masterpiece. The M&P is where it's at, IMHO.

I am one of the many who have had a bad experience with Taurus. I say neither! But of the 2 I guess I would have to go with the Taurus. (Lightening is going to strike b/c i just typed that!) the SW9ve is on the cheap side of S&W. As for a CCW I would not trust either! Go with a compact/sub-compact Glock and NEVER worry about it again!

if you dont like the Glock then there are always M&p's and XD's

Taurus 24/7

Almost considered getting one but never got around to it.

I have a sw9ve and I like it. It shoots good and accurate. Its the long trigger pull everyone doesnt like, But when you get used to it you wont notice.

If you are near Seymour or Knoxville you are welcome to try it out. S&W has good customer service if you have any problems with the gun.

Also like musicman said if you can wait for another $100 the m&p are nice.

I also have a m&p9 compact you can shoot as well

I like taurus, but I have to side with Musicman... the M&P9 (especially the compact 9mm) is really nice. I was very impressed with my wife's... almost too much. LOL!!

Maybe a used M&P9 would get you closer to the dollar mark you are trying for.

m&pc9, if I get a steady job again I may get with you and see if you would allow me to try the M&P 9c out. I have been thinking about getting one for my wife and would love to shot one. I've got a M&P 45 and love it.

In the words of Tommy Lee Jones "Get yourself a Glock and lose that nickel-plated sissy pistol", of course I am going to keep the Glock but I also just picked up a SW 3913 and it is a shooter. Anyways, I don't know what they are charging you but I would rather have a older model 19 than a brand new Taurus....but that is just me. I have never had a Glock let me down so I will stick with what I know works and I have had a bunch of them to boot.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll have to give the M&P a look. I've heard really good things about the 24/7. It's a bit on the large side for a CCW I think but like I said, I have my PT145 for that.

I know prices go all over, but what should I be paying (ballpark) for a new M&P?

Of your two choices I'd say Taurus, but...... like Musicman said, I'd get the M&P if I could. I just got one and really like it a lot and I've tried about all of them - SIG, Walther, XD, G19, as well as a few others. You could also hunt down a used Glock 19 or 17 for about the same as a new Sigma and have the real deal with much a better trigger etc.

Now you guys have me looking at the M&P. The price difference is manageable, I might have to put off the back-up camera installation for my truck for another week or two.

Looks like a very nice gun. Might try to find a range around here that will let me rent one to check it out. Anyway, thanks for the advice and I'll let you know how it goes!

Check Buds, they usually have decent prices on MP's unless you can find a used one. Also of the (2) I would go with the Taurus. I had a sigma and hated it. You also might look for a 3rd Gen smith auto, as they can usually be had for under 300 (4006 5906 etc). Check Summitgunbroker.

They seem to be running $430-$470 ATM.

Thanks, thought about that right after I asked  I just purchased a gun from Buds and was very happy with price and experience. I checked the price for the 9mm M&P and they had it for $469 shipped. Probably the best price I'd find on a new one unless a shop had it on sale, but I've yet to find a really great shop in my area.

Thanks again for the comments, I appreciate it.

Give a call to the locals. After factoring in tranfer fees it may be close versus buying online. I really suggest Hero Gear if you can find a way to make the trip. (Your location just says "Tennessee" so I don't know where you are.) Call Joe or Dan and see if they can help.

Hey MusicMan,

I'm in the Chattanooga area. I actually found Hero Gear by accident when a job of mine took me through Winchester just a couple weeks ago. Looked like a small shop from the outside but they had a pretty nice selection when I went in. I think I have the card he gave me, I'll try to look up their website. Thanks!

i like them both i like a heavy trigger but not a real fan of the trigger length on the sw9ve but it is a real shooter i put thousands of rounds through mine, i like the way the taurus feels and the trigger is a little better although i shot it less than the smith it still held up well i put about 800 to 1000 through it, i have owned one of each and i had absolutely no trouble with either. my choice would be based on the ability to conceal if i were carrying it if .

You ever been to Skips?

Actually used Skip's for my last FFL transfer. He didn't have anything in stock really but I've only been there once. Very nice guy. His business got hit pretty hard by the rain we had last week, I think he had 10" of water standing in his shop.
