Carry permit initially denied today. I suspect that a 40 year old charge for felonious assault that is on my background check that was dismissed by the state without prejudice. I just checked the online site and found the denial. This is the only thing on my record except for a bad check charge in 1977. I plan to appeal if this was the reason for denial. Does the state offer the reason for denial in the letter they send? I suspect that they should.

TBI will NOT give you a reason for denial. I went through this ONLY when we moved fron SoCal 12 years ago. I NEVER HAD AN ISSUE IN PURCHASING EVER until we moved to Tn. First transfer, DENIED!  Oh to the Hell no!  I appealed it and the transfer was granted. This took a couple of weeks.  Frustrating as crap!  This went on for a couple of years,  I would have to repeat the process for every purchase , and finally I said forget it, I contacted the Federal Bureau of investigation and requested a UPIN .  A "Unique Personal Identification Number"

You have to pay for fingerprints, filing, etc. yourself, but after about 6 to 7 months my investigation came back totally clear with the exception of a trespassing charge as a child. :cop:  Now when I go to purchase a new toy, I have to submit the UPIN number and it has to be called in to the Tennessee Bureau and I'm placed in a pending status anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 hours. Then I get cleared.

Was I a douche in my past life? I know I'm not the feds know I'm not, but the Tennessee Bureau of investigation's says I'm a loser!  And they can't even tell me why !!!!!!!! Asshats.......... Hell,  I even hear that the individuals that are spoken to from your fun store when you decide to make a transfer are not actual agents of the bureau, they are hired civilians to do the task! Frustration at its finest! Apply for a UPIN number!

The most common cause of this is that the Feds do not have a disposition listed. TBI should tell you that if that’s the case. They won’t give information out, but they might (depending on who you talk to) verify what you think is the problem.

There are several lengthy threads on here about this; but I can’t find any now.

Since it’s a carry permit and not a purchase I would first try to call Lisa Knight, Program Director for HCP. She has always been helpful.

I finally got a reason for denial. It was a worthless check charge in 1995 that was dismissed in 2001. I sent the documentation in yesterday and will wait to hear from the state. I shouldn't have a problem hopefully.
