They're all shooting 2" snubbies. Look to be Colt Detective Specials. I'd think regular officers would be issued 4" revolvers.

Didn't know female cops were a thing in 1948, always thought it came much later. Wondering if this photo was mislabeled and it is something else.

I think it's a staged PR photo. No way that they would be that close together if they were firing at targets - which the brass on the table suggests. If it's LA then why are at least four of them in long coats?

LAPD had the Nation's First Police woman

"In 1909, Los Angeles social worker Alice Stebbins Wells petitioned Mayor George Alexander and the City Council, requesting that an ordinance providing for a Los Angeles Policewoman be adopted. Not only was the measure passed, but on September 12, 1910, Mrs. Wells was appointed as the nation's first female policewoman with arrest powers."

I lived in the area for a few years in the Marine Corps. Never did I see long coats on anyone in Southern California.

Does anyone even own a coat in So-Cal?

In the low country all I ever saw were jackets, and that was pretty rare. Obviously, In the high desert and mountains it was different.

Not having any grass on hand for a skirt, grandpa thought squirrels would be a good substitute before the Luau

By 1980 they just shot themselves, and then took orders for a lot of vests.

Yep, Richard Davis made quite a lot of money travelling the world and shooting himself with a .44 Magnum to demonstrate his Second Chance vests.
