I'm honestly amazed that the Mg42 isn't still in use. To this day, it's still one of the finest LSWs ever made.

Can you imagine a scaled down version in 5.56??? Damn but that'd be a hell of a thing.

I'd say ammo supply is the issue. 1000 rds of 8mm is heavy. And that's barely a minute of firing.  You'd need a truck loaded with cases following the squad around, and then it's not exactly a "light" machine gun anymore.

That is actually an MG34, the 42's predecessor.

Thanks, I thought it looked a little different.

Did the shooter actually have any way to see where he was firing with this rifle? Or just shoot and pray he hit something?

The rifle has a push button that allows the soldier to lift up on the receiver and down on the stock until it snaps in place firmly. Another button allows it to be stowed. When up, there is a hollow through the now-vertical wrist section. At its base is a polished mirror. Along the left side wrist an extendable, rotating arm holds another mirror, which can be aligned with the rear sight.

Thanks for the information and the link. This is a most interesting rifle. I'd not seen anything on this before. I look forward to watching all the video and information.

Between Bonnie & Clyde with the BAR and Al Capone with the Tommy gun is where we lost full auto and the start of the sloop began.
