crooked shooting gun?

on one of my pistols i've had to push the front sight (windage) almost as far as i can to the side of it's dovetail to get it to shoot straight...

while it's zeroed now, it looks kind of lame/weird having the sight all the way over to one side of the dovetail when looking at the gun, but now POA = POI, and it's not me (i've checked and rechecked my technique and bench rested it to see if i was crazy...) and i've had the same model of gun before with no issue. the most i've ever had to move a sight was maybe a small fraction, never like this. so...

has this ever happened to anyone?

is this acceptable in a new gun?

does anyone think it's worth contacting the company to see if they'll do anything for me (new slide?, new barrel? both?)?

it hits where it's supposed to now, so i'm not sure they'll do anything, but it's pretty far off, i've never had to make an adjustment like this...:ugh:

Wow.....that thing must boomerang to the target. If I bought a new gun and it was that far off, the company would definitely hear from me. If they won't stand behind it after you talk to them, see if the company you bought it from will stand behind you when you contact them again. I'd also like to know the make and model please.

it's a ruger, an SR9, it's my second one. i put over 3500 rounds through my first one (stainless slide), and really liked the black one, so when i found one, i sold my old one to a friend (who's at around 4500 w/ zero issues, should've kept it...) and it's been solid except for this issue...

i noticed it shot to the left and decided to zero it fully once i got a fiber optic front sight on it. well, my local gunsmith told me something was wrong w/ the fitting/cut of either the sight or the dovetail... i had to send the slide to HiViz so they could check it out. they have fantastic customer service, since Rick at HiViz knew it took a couple bucks to ship the slide he offered to find the problem and install the sight then ship it back... turns out the problem was w/ ruger, the dovetail was cut improperly... he offered to custom fit it so i didn't have to go through the lengthy process of dealing with/shipping it to ruger (as long as the sight was fitted solid we decided it would have no effect either way so he put it in).

so it's back, and now it's zeroed, and as far as accuracy, i can empty a 17 round mag into a 6" target at 25yrds... it just looks like s**t and has me holding the gun crooked.

i'm going to contact ruger later today about making things right...

thanks for your opinions, i'll keep you posted...:)

I can't imagine that Ruger for the cost of replacing a slide wouldn't correct the matter. I'm sure they'll make it right.

wow. that was quick. spoke to a customer service rep at ruger named susan, and she listened and let me explain the problems i'm having with the POA/POI and the issue w/ the dovetail being cut improperly (rick at hiviz thought it was just a worn cutting machine... not bad craftsmanship), so the fact that it will be returning to them w/ an aftermarket sight (and some green loctite to contend with) is no big deal.

they will make it right! i was emailed a next-day air shipping label moments after i hung up the phone, and hope to have everything made right by the end of the week... we'll see.

Can the rear sight be drifted side to side as well? If so you could split the difference, correct the issue and look half again better. Just a thought?

...thought about that... yeah, the rear is windage adjustable, but the front would still have to be further out of center then it probably should be, plus as an EDC i want to be able to point shoot it, and 6" off is too much...

i still think the SR9 is a great gun, i'm pretty confident ruger will make things right...

  • 2 weeks later...

incase anybody had any doubts about ruger's customer service... got my SR9 back yesterday, a little over one week back and forth to ruger AZ. they put on a new slide (w/ stock factory sight), had someone shoot test the guns accuracy, picked up shipping both ways, and i've got a name of a gentleman there where i can send a receipt to get reimbursed if and when i decide to have a gunsmith re-install the aftermarket hiviz sight.

put 300 rounds through it this morning, looks brand new and it's dead on.

now that is customer service!

For the record, I'd just like to note:

There is a common phrase seen around here which is "When seconds count, the police are minutes away."

Guess how many seconds there are in a week.

THIS is why you do not trust a new platform for personal defense. All of the good customer service in the world does nothing for you when you wind up dead because you can't hit anything.
