Remote access to work computer from home

Recommended Posts

I mostly work from home and are currently using Log Me In to access my work computer. Log Me In has worked great but I'm looking for an alternative due to their price increase. What are some of the other options that  you all use to access other computers?

Thanks

Any chance your work has a VPN? if so, you can log onto it and then just use Remote Desktop. If they do not have...

Gotomypc is another option, but it is still $12 per month.

Showmypc is one that I use for one time connections, but they can have a remote setup too. Looks like $55 per year

You can also check out TeamViewer. I know their business plans are expensive, but I think personal ones are free. At least they used to be. I just can't see that on their site.

Depending on your tech level, you can use something like DYNDNS and Tightvnc. Those are free, but puts all the security stuff back on you to set up mostly.

Anymore questions, just ask.

CAUTION: TeamViewer runs all is through a server set. Once you connect to several computers they first send "play fair" warnings. After a bit, they block the ip's completely for TeamViewer access.

Their license is about 1,000.00 a year. I use it however I'd never pay for it as I have my client foot the bill. AnyDesk allows 1 connection at a time and RDC works once you're there. Downside is starting a remote computer or accessing a computer that is logged off or asleep.

I agree that VNC is the best free standby. Security however is a bugger unless you like to manage it and I don't.

After how long does Teamviewer block IPs?  I have it for over a year and it hasn't blocked me.  Just gives the pop-up about using for personal use if using free version.

You might still look into a cheap used VPN appliance to set up at the office. basically it is just like a router and just needs a static external ip from the Internet provider, then you use a conenction software to connect to it. Then remote desktop will get you to your PC. Not sure how your work is setup.

A used Sonicwall VPN can be $20 on eBay. Basically then you never need to worry if Teamviewer is going to block you or drop the free plan.

I know it seems a little tech heavy, but those can be a breeze to setup.

TV blocks free use when there are several up addresses used by the login, with whatever data flow they can see. You do have to have a monitor attached to the computer that you're logged in to so the local processing used. Basically it's hit or miss, until you start adding several computers that could look like professional use
