Sorry if this is a re-post.

I live on the outskirts of Murfressboro outside of city limits.

There is a huge empty bottle of Barcardi I'd love to send a 7.62 MM round through in my back yard on this quiet Sunday morning.

Would I get the LEO sent to my house? I've shoot outside in a back yard a few times and nobody has said anything as of yet..

why don't you call the local sheriff's office and ask if it is against the law to discharge a firearm where you live? They aren't going to roll out on you for asking. If there is no ordinance against it they will tell you.

Be sure of where the bullet is going. Generally you cannot fire towards a residence or other structure where people are expected be at.

I live outside city limits in Wilson County and shoot in my backyard all the time. I live in and on the outside edge of a neighborhood but have 6 acres and back up to hundreds of acres. Yesterday, A friend and I went to the Stones River range to shoot his new Bushmaster AR among other pistols and my AR only to find a long line and an hour plus wait. We decided to just go back to the house and shoot in the back yard. Well, after about a half-hour and 150 or so rounds a Sherriff’s Deputy showed up. He walked down from some houses on a parallel street that back up to the neighborhood side of my property. Anyone of these homeowners could look out their back windows and see us as it is only around 300 hundred yards or so to where we had parked a truck. I asked if someone complained and he said yes, they just wanted to be sure sue everything was on the up and up (kind of funny as I would think something was awry if I only heard ONE shot, not 150+ :(). I told him I was the property owner, we weren't violating any laws as far as I knew and showed him the target and direction we were shooting was into a large incline so all safety precautions were being taken. He agreed, was extremely polite the entire time and left after a couple of minutes. This was the first time they have ever been out but honestly I had never shot that many rounds at one time before. We probably shot another 200 or so rounds after he left. I sure didn’t want to give anyone any idea they could stop me from shooting in the future by calling the Sherriff. :D

So the point I've taken soo long to get to is that even if it is legal, you may still be visited by the local Sherriff.

Letter rip!! Rutherford County doesn't have a noise ordinance. If you are in a subdivision there might be some type of restrictive covenance that might address noise but the Sheriff's department can't enforce it.

Why not show some respect for those living around you and shoot sometime other than a Sunday am?

AFAIK if you're outside city limits, NOT shooting toward another house, and are atleast 100 ft from the road, you should be good. It may vary in some counties but I have never heard of a county noise ordinance, they are usually city ordinances that get you.

You are fine. Just make sure you are shooting in a safe direction. If a call did come in we would come out but just to make sure you are shooting safely.

I have a couple of family members who are Wilson County Deputies. I trust that polite deputy was named "Barry" or "Don." :P

They are getting calls all of the time from "move-ins" who have never lived outside of a large city. These folks just can't understand that good ole' country boys are allowed to shoot on their land. :)

One of my cousins told me that they had one woman who called and said that there was "a war" going on somewhere near her - - - It was Opening Day of Dove Season!

I do not recall his name- Big guy, late 20's early 30's, light brown hair...

Yes, I know a couple of LEO's and they've told me the same kind of stories.

When I was younger, we were admonished not to shoot on Sunday at all. Of course that was years ago and the world has changed quite a bit.

as for the respect part, I would say any time after 9 am is fine...simply because slothfulness is a sin :)

That's funny stuff!! Almost as bad as the guy down the street from me that called the Sheriff because a kid was riding him 4 wheeler down the street making too much noise. The kid was like 6 years old and the 4 wheeler might have been 50cc. You woulda thought the Hells Angels were coming through the way he acted!!

Same sort of thing for a few of us at a friends house in Gladeville(840, midway between 24 and 40). New Years day '07. We were sighting in a new muzzle loader and just some fun shooting with the usual stuff. We were also shooting 2 semi auto 1919's. The first was only a belt or two to work out the new-build bugs then set it aside. The second one we had mounted on a rig we made to shoot from the trailer hitch on the back of my friends suburban. The "automatic gunfire" is what brought the two sheriffs out to have a look. They were very polite, asked reasonable questions and wanted to make sure the 1919's were built truly semiauto. By the same token, we werent drinking, had all the proper safety precautions and were, of course, very polite to the officers.

Its all about demeanor and knowing your surroundings. Dont shoot within any city limits, have the safety precautions squared away before the first shot and dont sweat the small stuff when the officer stops by. Work with them and everything will go buttery smooth.

HAHA.... last sunday afternoon me and my buddies shot 3 boxes of 100 12 gauge shells. this afternoon we were just about to finish our second box of 100 rounds when 2 shelby county sheriffs rolled up the driveway. this was the 4th time we got the cops called on us there and there is nothing illegal about us shooting there, usually they just check where were shootin and leave, but this one cop that just moved here from New York told us we were breakin the law shootin there, but neither him or the people he radio'd could tell us what exactly made it illegal for us to shoot there!

If you are that close to On Target, you can probably hear me shooting in my backyard on various days.

I have sheriffs come out regularly, we usually talk, they run my weapon, ect, and then let me keep shooting. The neighbors generally don't care, though I have been called in a few times.

I observe all safety rules, I shoot into monster oak stumps I have put too many AK rounds into to even count without any penetration issues. It is only 20 yards so I mainly do pistol work with it.

Dear Inconsiderate firearm discharger:

There are safe firing ranges with established rules for the protection of all people at the firing range. There is proven research that justifies approved firing ranges that meet Federal, State, and Local firearms safety rules and procedures. Firing into dirt banks within two hundred yards of any potential humans straying within that radius is foolish and dangerous. Children and those people who have not been trained on how to safely walk around or in the vicinity of firearms being discharged are at risk and their safety is more important than one's entertainment. Also, people move out into the County to escape firearm discharge related noise. How would you like it if someone took 1500 "Cherry Bombs" or "M-80s" and set them off in your front yard, or in their front yard, for entertainment reasons, at anytime on any day?

The right to bear arms is protected by the Constitution of the United States. The right to cry "Fire" in a theater is not. There is good reason for both protections.

Society usually raises its voice in objection to freedoms when those freedoms impose themselves upon a citizen's own freedom from violation of their "Peace, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness".

Keep on disturbing the peace of those in the County with reckless and endangering and inconsiderate behavior and the peace loving considerate citizens will find a way to control your freedom to "Raise Cane" via a High Powered, High Velocity, Extremely Loud Firearm.... Laws are passed to protect people from other people's behavior...that violates "Life , Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness".

Whether it is in Rutherford County or Wilson County or "Any County Tennessee".

Happy New Year!

is that post for real?

If it is I doubt you will get much sympathy. Most guys here would love to live where it is legal to shoot.

I agree with being considerate, but shooting during the day is not over the top. A safe backstop is just that, safe.

Follow the laws and fire away.
