Turkey hunting

Since this has been a bad deer season I'm looking forward to some spring time temps and hearing those gobbles thunder across the valleys. In a little less than 3 months it is on! Anybody else getting fired up about turkey season?

I stay fired up, big farm down the road from my hunting property and you can almost always drive by and there will be at least 50 birds in the field feeding. And now that a lot of the hunting shows have switched to birds it is just feeding the frenzy!!

I have had all the equipment to Turkey hunt for the last 2 springs, and have yet to do it.

Maybe I can get out there this spring.

I have a flock of 40 or so that live in my back yard and wander the place all the time and my wife won`t let me or anyone else shoot one. I can walk out when they are around and get within 30-40 feet of them without any problem. At least they are fun to watch and my cats like to play with them.

I was hiking out of the TWRA land around Percy Priest and watched about 15 of them fly up to roost at dusk.

Anyone ever Bowhunt turkeys? Just curious how difficult that is.

I'm just now getting started with bow hunting and hope to start deer hunting next year.

not to hard early in the season to hunt them from a blind. the run and gun(bow) style approach is very diffucult. very diffucult to draw on them when not in a blind. they need to be close for most hunters under 20 yards. that is why later in the season after they have been called to several times it is harder to kill them but still fun to try.

I have done o.k in the past with a bow plan on using it more this year.

How are the TWRA areas around south Nashville for this?

I'm new to hunting so I'll take any suggestions..

I have never hunted in Nashville, but you could get a map and start scouting an area about 1 to 2 weeks before season. A good tip is to try and find where they were scratching the gound, it will look like a v. Find an area with a good food scource or creek. Also stay until dark and try and listen to them fly up and roost (you will know it can be loud)

Also stay until dark and try and listen to them fly up and roost (you will now it can be loud)

TWRA said last year was the biggest hatch ever,it will be a good year for my sons first bird.

I can tell you that the last few times I was at Area II there were all sorts of turkey signs and I saw a few turkey as well. Go to the end of Mt. View Road and park in front of the barricade. Walk straight back and keep your eye out for scratch marks. Lots of trails back in there and I think calling near the power line could be productive.

I'll be out there at some point this spring.

That's actually one of the areas I was hoping to go myself.

I was curious if they had a problem with anyone parking in front of the barricade.

There doesn't look like there is much parking around any of the WMA's I've found.

I called the officer for that WMA and that's where he told me to park.

I have seen some fresh spray paint on the old road. Could be gang tag, could be kids. Just FYI.

That would be great, I've been looking at the different WMA's in this area and I'm sure I'll have more questions.
