S&W Model 30, .32 S&W Long

Recommended Posts

Just bought a S&W Model 30 from a friend. Of course I am going to be reloading for it. All the little 32 Smiths I have shot have been great. Not much noise or recoil. Just a pleasant revolver to shoot.

Does anybody know who locally has some 32 S&W Long brass for sale. Doesn't have to be new. Used brass is fine. If I can scrounge up about 100 rounds, it should last me almost forever. Will be loading light, plinking loads.

Also need to find my own set of dies. Will be borrowing a set from time to time till I get mine.

Any load recommendations? I plan on using a 98 gr SWC. I've heard that 231 and Bullseye are great in this case. Also Red Dot, Green Dot and Trail Boss.

Thanks!

Mike...

Make sure ya do a range report on the Model 30... I've been wanting one bad... We've got an old SW hand ejector 32 that was out of a dear friend's estate... It's in honored retirement now... By the way, Starline does 32 brass if ya can't find any...

Also, you mind sharing what the "mate rate" was on your 30?

I paid $375 and it is in excellent condition. May have been too much, but they seem to be going up every time I've checked the last year or so.

I doubt this little Smith will ever have another factory round through it. Brass should be easy to get. I was just hoping somebody local had some used brass to get me started. I'm sure the Reloaders Bench has Starline.

The model 30's are turnin into collector's pieces... That always raises the price... I can well remember when no one would buy one... Everybody wanted a 38 special...

Bud, what barrel length do you have? The 30-1 is probably the best variation of all the 30's and 31's. I have heard the 30-1 is capable of some seriously hotnliads and should have been chambered in 32mag, and many of them have been reamed to accept the 32h&r mag anyway. Otherwise you get to enjoy some light recoiling 32s&w and 32s&w long cartridges.

I am a huge fan of the .327federal, however I have not shot one, but I love the versatility and the extra round. If I had one it would probably shoot mostly .32acp rounds even though some  weak primer strikes may occur.

No, the .38 should have a little less even though the .38LCR is lighter than the .327. I do know that in the same weight and size of firearm that the .32 H&r mag recoils less than a standard pressure 38spl.

Not a very good pic, but here is my Model 30. Serial number puts it around 1967 I think. Shot it today with some handloads(98gr swc, Win 231). Shot good and to point of aim at 15 yards. Opened it up and it was nice and clean, but had not seen a drop of oil in a long time. Running smooth as a Singer now.
