I would say 1911 because that is what I am going to use for USPSA and IDPA. But I haven't shot the new XDM so I couldn't weigh in on that although everything I have heard is that trigger reset is better than the XD.

I like the XDm, but i shoot a .40 cal version in idpa currently. both will do well, but my XDm has ran with muddy mags when the 1911 guys started jamming up during a match after a hard rain

I haven't shot IDPA for a while, but wouldn't both guns be in different classes? If that were the case I would choose whichever gun was in the class I wanted to shoot. Other than that I wouls choose the one most like whatever pistol you currently carry (train like you fight).

Unless the rules have changed 10 is the mag limit. In that case a steel framed 1911 would offer several advantages: 1) less recoil; 2) 10 round vs 11 - you get to reload from slide-lock and not have to waste time retaining the mag more often; and 3) a better trigger.

If you want to win trophies, the steel framed 5" 9mm 1911 is the way to go. If you want as much familiarity with your EDC as possible, just use your EDC/house gun (provided your house gun fits in the box).

I competed with a 2" 6 shot 38spl and speedstrips because that's what I carried back when I played IDPA. Yes, I was at a disadvantage to the 4" steel framed heavy barreled 357's shooting minimal 38 loads in Safariland speed loaders; but, I knew what I could do with my EDC

Did you get a chance to shoot Chip's Witness? Sweetness! If I were picking a gun for IDPA/ESP it would be a steel gun with a sweet single action trigger.

No...didn't shoot the witness. Chip and Michael were shooting it after last match in Dec though. Chip didn't offer to let me shoot it and I tend to not ask someone to shoot their gun unless they offer. If i am interested in what someone is shooting, I do ask what they have and how they like it, but I never ask to shoot it. Has nothing to do with Chip or anyone else...I'm just weird about asking to shoot someone else's gun.

Springfield XDm and Springfield 1911 are both ESP class. I currently have an XD 9 and the Springfield 1911, however, I was considering trading the 1911 for the XDm. I usually take both to the match with me as a "just in case"...ie...backup in case of failure. I think I am going to hang on to the 1911.

If you had the choice between Springfield XDm or Springfield 1911 5" 9mm for IDPA, which would you prefer ?

Just curious.

another option: i'll let you put as many rounds through my SR9 as you want if it's back from ruger in time to shoot at gallatin this weekend...

even though i've had to send my second one back to ruger because the sights/slide on this particular one is f'd up (i posted a thread about it: "crooked shooting gun?"), after shooting it back to back w/ an xdm9 this past weekend, i'd still highly recommend it (after i show you how to easily lighten up the trigger of course...).

in many ways it's like a hybrid of a hi cap 9mm and a 1911... and can be had for like 400 bucks.
