Pulling bullets...lesson learned

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

:wall:I loaded 100 45 Colt rounds with lead semi wadcutters of unknown heritage. I didn't load them to max or anything, but after shooting about a dozen, they leaded like the devil. I loaded some more really light, and they shot well with no leading. I suppose they are quite soft.

Anyway, today I decided to pull the remaining 88 bullets and reload them with the mild load.

I learned that while the hammer type kinetic puller works well enough for one or two rounds, it ain't much fun doing a bunch.

Load any new loads you want to try in small quantities.:D

Wisdom here!

I learned the hard way to only load 10-15 each when working up a load with new to me components... function check and chrono before any mass loading. Saves a lot of unnecessary work.

And Yep...kinetic pullers are fine for a few rounds only. :)

I once tore town a 1,440 round case of 7.62x25 using an impact puller. After figuring out a rythym it wasnt too bad. still took me the better part of an afternoon to finish. I was really surprised the kinetic puller didny fall apart after that many.

yep, understand the temptation to continue to 'manufacture' a new load, especially when one is convinced  it is the 'perfect' round only to find out otherwise.  That is why is wish I only had to step out back and fire a few rounds for testing......but pretty sure it would upset the neighbors.

That's what makes me feel like an idiot....I CAN step out back and test fire a load. I was just too lazy.

been there, done that, and got the t-shirt.    i pulled many reloads in my life time with the hammer and/or a press mount puller.   then i got smart.  now i load 20 rounds for testing.  i run five rounds across the chronograph and the rest on paper to check grouping.   then i load about 20 of the best lot to recheck grouping.   that way i have a small number of rejects rounds to mess with.   most of the time i use these rejects to heat the barrel and check my shooting stance before the match starts.

Santa brought me a chronograph. I look forward to using it.

if you do any type of reloading a chronograph is a must.  today they don't cost much and with one you can make some good safe loads.  got my chronograph in 83 and it has been one of the best reloading item i got.
