Serial Number Search

I did a search but did not find what I was looking for. If this has been covered, I apologize. Please point me to the proper area.

Is there a service I can use to check the serial number of a handgun owned by an individual to check whether it is stolen or not? He says it is legal but he bought it from another individual. I don't want to touch a stolen gun but I also don't want to search the serial number only to have the law knock on my door and ask me why I am searching that number.

Also, I have a relative who is a State Trooper (not Tennessee). Can he check it without getting in trouble with his superiors. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Most of the time the local cop shop will run it for you. BUT they want the gun in their hands while doing so. That way if it comes back stolen then they have recovered it. If you go to the cops with your friend and ask them to run it they should. If your friend shys away from this suggestion then run like heck away from the deal.

l would buy the gun and keep a record of who you bought it from. In the very unlikely event something happens you can then prove who you got it from.

All used guns are not stolen, I would guess a extremely small percent turn out to be so.

Since I prefer off the books guns myself, I wouldn't worry about it. Only way PD/BATFor anyone else is going to know you have it would be if you end up using it or have it stolen or maybe have a gunsmith work on it and runs the serial number for some reason.

I think you can take the gun to a pawn shop, pawn it for a buck and buy it back. The pawn shop should run the numbers for ya.They did back in Texas
