Shotgun inserts in different calibers

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried any of these? I am talking about the inserts that let's you shoot 9mm, .45, .410 and such in a 12ga. I know they make that X whatever shotgun that comes with them. I even saw one for a .303 british rifle to shoot .32.

While I rarely run low on ammo. Might be a nice back up plan if things went south. Something to be said for being able to use almost any caliber picked up. Even though acuracy has to be bad.

More of a "look at this" kind of thing to me. Never saw a real use for one. "Things going south" and I am shooting with a BP firearm and taking what the other guy has till I get what I need.

I just try to live by The Boy Scout moto to always be prepared. These would just provide an extra option. I keep enough ammo around for what I have that I am not running out any time soon no matter what. I just figure in bad times, I would like whatever leg up I could get.

Really if things did fall apart, the guy that would do best would be the one with the warehouse full of food, guns and toilet paper. Tp would be like gold after a little while. Lol

I'm not familiar with them, are they just a chamber insert which would basically just give you an inch or two of velocity for whichever caliber you have inserted, or is it a full length insert?

I assume that they would be full length inserts. Otherwise you would damage the barrels. A lot of skeet shooter use inserts. Instead of buying multiple guns they buy a 12ga and then get 20 and 28 ga inserts. Never seen them in rifle or pistol cartridges.

This is an example of a 12ga to 9mm

The next is a .303 to .32

They are not full length in either case. I think the 12ga would have the most chance of damaging the barrel.

I have never seen those before.  I checked out the website and they have the rifled adapters in 3", 5", 8" .  Not sure why you would want to shoot a 9mm out of a 12ga though.

The rifle adapters are supposed to be for training and reduced noise.

The shotgun are usually marketed as a SHTF solution to scavenging ammo.

I'd give the designer a thumbs up for thinking outside the box, but that's about it. Been trying to see a benefit to this and just can't come up with enough juice for the squeeze. I'm all about guns with cartridge versatility, like a Glock 23 with a 9mm barrel, a Rossi Circuit Judge, a S&W Gorvernor, anything that works with .22LR and .22Mag and maybe even those full length shotgun caliber inserts that KahrMan mentioned, but I just don't like the idea of a little chamber insert inside a big ole shotgun barrel that only gives me a couple inches worth of velocity, and I wouldn't want a full length insert because I imagine it would add a lot of weight for say a 9mm out of a 12 gauge bore that it would be counterproductive. I would never use one for hunting anything given the availabilty of more efficient hunting arms in easy to find calibers, and defensively I would never want to use a 9mm with a 2" barrel in the same package that I could use some good 00 Buck. Just my two cents, but if you do end up getting a set I hope you share with us your feedback.

I have  just toyed with the idea. I am thinking if I get some, I might start with something like a .410 insert for 12ga. Not as much of a stretch there.

I am just constantly knocking around ideas. I just need to finally get me that Savage 24 combo gun in 30-30 over 12ga. Just can"t find one at the same time my wallet is not already  crying. Lol

I considered that myself. Just out of curiosity...

Do they work with pump or semiauto actions?

Yes, one shot at a time. I doubt it will cycle.

I suppose if rifles and handguns got banned these could be an option.  Maybe?  Do they work with pump or semiauto actions?

I've only ever seen people using them in single shot break action shotguns or as single shot in bolt action rifles

I see no use in them past being a novelty. Savage marketed something similar nearly a century ago. They come up for sale every now and then. Collectors like them, but I jst don't see much utility there.

You are making a large assumption that if rifles and handguns got banned we would actually turn them in.

I guess that is why every chance I get I buy another box of 3 inch Mag 12 gauge rounds to feed my shotgun. I have plenty of other ammo for all my other guns but shotgun was last purchase so still stocking ammo for it.

I worry less about a ban than something happening that makes ammo unavailable in a meltdown kind of way.

Heck, I have 20ga shells and I don't even have a 20ga. Lol.

These would be a fallback tool plan D when you are out of anmo, have scrounged all your calibers you can find, ran out of reloading supplies, and need to use the ammo you just found in something since you do not have that caliber gun

I know the ideal answer is to have guns of multiple calibers, but my budget limits my purchases. I know that is not the norm here. Most of you guys have waaayyy more guns than I will ever get to toy with.

I also know this senerio is pretty unlikely,  but like insurance, sometimes you get it hoping you never need it.

Maybe useful during TEOTWAWKI if something happens to all your 9mm guns but you still have a pile of 9mm ammo.

I must have been typing mine when you posted, but exactly what I mean.

Back years ago when I was a kid and did a lot of shooting with a friend we were shooting some pigeons for a farmer to get them out of his barn and ran out of 12 gauge shells. The farmer had some 20 gauge boxes of ammo. He gave it to us and we took our pocket knives and cut the 12 gauge plastic cases off the 12 gauge brass and inserted the 20 gauge rounds inside the 12 gauge cases and were able to shoot the last 3 boxes and finish off the pigeons. Both of us were shooting side by side double barrels. Don't know if it would have worked in pump guns or semiautos..........................

Ahh the things we did as kids. 1/2 genius and 1/2 stupid all in one. Sounds like you found a good solution to a problem and did the job you were asked to do. You guys have a mess of pigeon for dinner that night?
