Memphis Breaks Homicide Record

When my wife and me were dating in the mid 90's we were don in Memphis trying to find some good BBQ places to try . The urge for #2 hit me and I mean it hit hard. We were in one of the real bad areas of Memphis. It was bad . I ran into this gas station and threw my pistol at my wife and said " if something happens just leave and if you must then shoot while leaving" . Yeah , it was that bad. And for me to say that it has really got to be bad , I'm a calm  and reasonable person but this place looked like a scene out of some movie. I bet every thug there had dope and a gun on them.

It's been a long time since we've had a Memphis thread. Usually it ends up with the Native Memphians getting upset. I'll just say this, I have never been to Memphis but I would love to party there sometime. I think the best part of Tennessee is Nashville and everything east of it but I'm sure there are nice suburbs of Memphis as well.

I do feel like Memphis has earned the reputation they hold and I'm sorry if that pisses off any of the natives here on the forum.

I had a very similar experience at a gas station in Savannah GA. Thankfully I had more than one gun with me but I came out and said to my(now) wife "I'm surprised you didn't have the gun out of the glove box". She calmly lifted a blanket that was over her and showed me the Ruger LCR in her hand. I guess my point is that there are some really bad parts of town in just about every city but some cities definitely have a larger portion of areas you should avoid.

I had some friends go to Memphis one time back years ago and they learned right quick, getting lost in Memphis and driving into the wrong neighborhood does has consequences if your not on your toes. They went into a neighborhood and made a turn onto a dead in street because there was no sign. When he realized what he had done he was trying to turn around when about 8 guys surrounded his car with his family in it. As luck would have it a police car was driving past the end of the street and stopped and tooted his siren and all the guys left and he and his family were able to get out of there with the policeman showing them which way to go.

In 1982 (Pre cell phone era) I leathered up and hopped on my 1978 Confederate Gray Harley Lowrider after work one night and road down to Atlanta to visit my brother.  I hit Atlanta just as the Braves game had ended which made a Harley on the interstate at 70+ bumper to bumper kind of unnerving.  I took the wrong exit and pulled into a mini market / gas station to find a phone.  I noticed that this was probably not the best part of town when I entered the lot but thought I would make a quick call and get on my way.

When I entered the market I saw two inch glass with slide through windows for payment.  In 1982 this meant I was definitely not where I needed to be and I seemed to be drawing a lot of attention by just being there.  I walked to the back of the store by the beer cooler and found the phone.  When my brother answered and I told him what exit I took and where I had stopped to call he said for me to get out of there quick and stop three exits down and call back for directions.  I had noticed a group of guys enter the front and look around the store, then focus on me in the back and start down the far side of the store in my direction.

I hung up and opened my leathers enough to access my Model 66 if needed as I headed for the opposite door.  As I got to my bike I was praying that the starter would kick for I didn't figure I would get a chance to kick it.  The group from inside came out and started running my way and another group from the lot started my way.  My bike fired on first hit, I jammed a gear, popped the clutch and left that lot like a rocket.  I felt like Arlo Guthrie leavin' the Dew Drop Inn except I didn't make an extra lap. ( Analogy for those old enough to understand the reference) I was just glad to get out of there without incident.

Once I met up with my brother, ( a gas truck driver in the area) he told me that they had to get a Police escort to deliver fuel to that location and two others in that area, anytime they make a drop.

I'm not gonna dog out Memphis. It's a good town. Like all larger cities it has it's bad areas...just gotta remember the "Rule of Stupids".

I used to make frequent trips up to Memphis from New Orleans (where I worked) to Tom Given's old Rangemaster range on South Mendenhall. If any of you have been there you know it's not the best area of town. But I never had any trouble there...of course I adhered to the "Rule" above. I would never venture into any of these areas unarmed and without alertness and generally have at least one friend along.

There were areas back in NO that were definitely a No-Go...so, I just didn't go...unless I had to... fwiw, at least back in NO, if you were EMS or dressed in scrubs (always armed) you very rarely caught a negative look, even i n questionable areas. Even the thugs knew they may well need your services. Nothing 100%, but I worked 5 years in the "Parish", Lower 9th Ward/Chalmette, and had worked on quite a few of the lowlifes and bangers, saw them all too frequently our ER, so it's not like we were unacquainted...

Point is, there's good places and bad places in every city. Just keep your head up and don't act a fool, don't be where you shouldn't be and do things you shouldn't do, just because you think you should be able to. There's good folks in Memphis and the BarBQue ain't half bad. ;)

You got friends here and you didn't piss me off.  What pisses me off is most of the state talks about us like we are a war zone.  But the metro area used to be the largest by land size.  Don't know if it still is.  That means that our population, smaller than Nashville, is spread over a larger area.  There are a few small areas where all of these murders are taking place and they are almost always not random.   There are some great places around here.  But no-one wants to see that.

Memphis is not a war zone Cap. Far from it.

I worked a stent at Kaiser Richmond Hospital, San Francisco's North Bay area. The ER registration clerks sat behind bullet resistant glass with a Sheriff's Deputy. You got wanded coming in for your shift...all the patients had to be wanded. You could hear the gun shots outside at night.

Heck, we've had shootouts in 2 of the "Charity" hospitals I've worked at in New Orleans and one in a hospital when I worked in Kansas City.

I haven't run across anything like that in Memphis. :)

You just learn what areas of any city you have no business being in ... kinda hard to stop what slithers into the E.R sometimes though...LOL

I didn't deny that Memphis has more crime.  What I said is that most of that crime is in very small areas of the city.

One day, I'll learn to keep my mouth shut in these threads.

Just trying to point out the differences between Memphis and Nashville. Not trying to bash Memphis. I like that town. Spent lots of time there.
