AR Lower Receiver

Recommended Posts

As I mentioned, the stripped lower is where you want to save money. No point spending it on a name brand. The upper, esp the barrel, is where you want to spend money because that will determine the gun's accuracy and other characteristics.

The lower on an AR is the "gun". It has the serial number on it and therfore classifies it as a firearm. Same thing with pistols. The frame is the "gun" while the slide, barrel, and other small parts are just parts. It all depends on where the serial number is located.

I have a Stag AR and am totally satisfied with it. CMT (Stag's parent company) supplies lowers and parts for Smith & Wesson, Stag, and Rock River Arms. They put out a good quality lower. It might not be as good as some of the other high end lowers, but it is still a high quality part.

Okay - so the decision to purchase a lower for Fathers day has been made. Now I just need to figure out which one. I am going to call my local gun shop (Range USA) and see what they can do later today. I will give them the CC information so if they have to order it, I can get it on Sunday when I go to shoot.

Off topic but stil valuable. One of my customers directed me to a Supreme Court decision regarding Thomson Center. Apparantly at one time they shipped a carbine conversion kit along with their pistols, allowing you to add a stock and longer barrel. So the ATF maintained this was a SBR and subject to tax and regulation under NFA. The issue was whether the combination constituted a SBR even without being assembled as such.

The Supreme Court affirmed the appeals' court decision that because the items did not necessarily have to be assembled as such, the kit did not constitute a SBR. Apparantly Justice Scalia asked the ATF if every household with both a shotgun and a hack saw was then in violation of the NFA. They didnt have an answer.
