This looks really interesting. I'm trying to get into long range shooting, but I haven't started yet. That said, I'm not going to participate in this event this year. But it may be a plausible endeavor for next year. Do any of you guys have any suggestions for gear? Or sources of education on range spotting and stuff? How does somebody practice/train for this type thing?

Also, I'm not sure I posted this in the right section. Feel free to move it or take it down if I didn't.

Applied Ballistics & Shooter Ballistics

This course is a specialized class intended to teach shooters how to set up and run Applied Ballistics or Shooter Ballistics Programs. It also covers the meaning behind each setting. Precision Rifle I: Long Gun Fundamentals

This course is intended for shooters who want to increase their skill and knowledge of the long rifle as a system. The classroom portion will consist of a rifle and gear assessment, recommendations for equipment, fundamentals review, and the reasoning behind fundamentals. Then it is off to the firing line for sight-in and fundamental shooting drills that are a must for every serious precision shooter to have in his or her toolbox. Students enrolling in this course must bring a quality bolt-action or a semi-automatic center-fire rifle, in good working condition, chambered in calibers equal to or larger than .223, which is also equipped with a good-quality optical sight, bi-pod and shoulder strap/sling. A rear bag is also required. Students will will be shooting at a distance of 100 yards. Students should come prepared for any weather conditions.

Precision Rifle II: Exterior Ballistics In Practice

This course requires the skills learned in the Long Gun Fundamentals course and focuses on exterior ballistics in real world use. You will learn how to arrive at your scope correction factor, use multiple B.C.'s and true your shooting solutions for the up-most accuracy at distance. You will experience both controlled and uncontrolled variables and learn the correct way to deal with them in the field. Students will be shooting from 100 through 1000 yards. Students enrolling in this course must bring a quality bolt-action or a semi-automatic center-fire rifle, in good working condition, chambered in calibers equal to or larger than .308, which is also equipped with a good-quality optical sight and shoulder strap/sling as well as a rear bag. Students are expected to bring rifles that are properly pre-zeroed at 100 yards. Precision Rifle I is a pre-requisite and to get the most out of this class it is highly recommended that you have attended the Applied Ballistics / Shooter Ballistics Class and have ammunition capable of at least 1 MOA at distance. Students should come prepared for any weather conditions.

Precision Rifle III: Advanced Long Range Rifle

This course further refines the skills acquired in the Precision Rifle I & II courses. The instructor will cover wind reading, hi / low angle shots, position shooting, sling use, obstacle shooting, and low light conditions and a host of other subjects.  This course builds on the concepts of marksmanship by teaching the student how to shoot to the strongest position. Students will be shooting from 100 to 1250 yards in varying light and wind conditions. Students are expected to bring rifles that are properly zeroed at 100 yards and chambered for cartridges capable of sustaining supersonic velocity at 1000 yards. Students should contact the instructor for a list of other required gear. Precision Rifle II is a pre-requisite. Students should come prepared for any weather conditions.

In this setting the student will have the benefit of the instructor's full attention and knowledge. With private instruction the student benefits by learning new skills in a shorter time frame. Students can ask specific questions and get answers tailored to the students' personal learning objectives.
