That's awesome.

Now, if someone wanted to do it right, they'd print each piece individually and then fit/assemble.

I'd love to have one that is 1:1, all major parts removable, etc, and be able to buy a few real springs so that it felt operational other than the fact it isn't. Have the barrel 1:1 but do something like leave the chamber solid/filled so no round could go in it. Sure, you might say it doesn't have a firing pin, etc but someone else might say lets drill a hole and make one in zipgunesque.

I don't have the cad skills but no reason that it couldn't be done.  Some of the areas would be a little tricky.  But materials are getting better constantly and some of the old issues aren't issues anymore.  I love 3d printing.

Does the printer come with software that lets you make a 3D model from scratch?

Can you use a 3D solid such as as a .CatPart or .STP?

No but there are free programs out there like the autodesk suite.   I think the ultimaker communicates with cura for a slicer and I don't know what file types you can import.  But I know you can use .stl.  Your solidity of print and all that is set in the slicer.

We have a cheap Dremel brand 3D printer at work. We also have a high resolution optical scanner, so yeah....
