Problem with Wirless G WRT54G

It works fine, that is how I am here but if it sits for an hour or two, sometimes even while I am actively online, it will stop working and email is not able to get messages, the internet won't go to new pages etc. If I look at my wireless manager on my laptop, it shows that I am connected and all is good in the world, but it don't work. I then go in to my office, all the lights on the router are on and look fine. But even the office pc that is directed connected not working. So I have to unplug the power to the router, wait 15 or so seconds, re plug in, and in about 15-30 seconds, I am up and running. Usually when it goes out or something like when I unplug it, the software on the office pc says something, like network error.

Is there a sleep setting or something, that is what it reminds me, but for some reason it won't wake up.

Thanks for your time and happy new year:D

I have that same router. as do a few friends. Funny that we were discussing this router just the other day.

i cant seem to get this lynksis wireless n router to work at all. i want to smash its ****.

those god damn things are notorious for that

i've owned 5 of them in my lifetime. 3 have died.

the one i gave my mom runs like a champ for years. its an older 802.11b series.

on the other hand, i went through 3 802.11 g's before switching to a trendnet. the trendnet seems to be much more stable. i flashed the 4th linksys with linux and turned it into a wireless bridge and its been working fine too.

best advice i can give you is that they are very finicky syncing with cable modems. reset the linksys router. power everything down and wait about 5 minutes. power up the cable modem. plug in the ethernet and then power up the router. set the router to dhcp and pray.

if that doesn't work bring it over and we can all dress up in braveheart face paint and smash it to tiny pieces.

those linksys routers are trash... ******* i hate 'em. i'm on like my 4th one.

i've had my wrt54g for like ****ing 5 years.

+1 - got mine way back in college, flashed to linux (surprise, surprise) and still runs like a champ.

yeah man ... thats the one i have .. **** hardly ever gives me problems.

wrt54g

I updated the firmware to this I forget where or what it was but gave me more setup options. Occasionally my wife's laptop about 30~40 feet away will lose signal but overall its been fine.

Firmware Version: v4.71.1, Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c

i've owned 4) wrt54g's

they are ****. great when they work. will drive you insane when they just quit for no reason.

Mine started the same thing several month ago. Same model and all. I chunked it in the trash. I only had it hooked up so the Wii could get internet access.

This seem to start when I hooked our Wii up.....hmmmm.

Good luck! I had the same router once- worked like a clock- never a problem- for about 3 years. Then one day it quit and never worked again. 3 years of 24/7 service. I hate router problems 'cuz I am techno-slow.

Yep, those problems are very annoying, Makes me want to kick things.:chill:

Course one could wire their house with CAT 6 cabling. Hook a 4/8/16 port hub up to the cable modem and be done with it.

Actually, my brother is here, we could do that, he use to do that for a living, now it is just a side business!

Two and a half years out of our's, and it does that intermittenly. First, I had to update the firmware. Then at another point I had to do a Hard Reset, which is completely resetting the router (I saved my config and then just re-uploaded it). It eventually just gave up the ghost and we're using another one now with zero problems.

Yeah, they have their problems, but they are the -generally- cheaper router.

Oh, and the config, was also compatible to the new router, though the OLD Linksys Monitor thing was not.

EDIT: All our Wii does is slow everything down, and only when we are using Nintendo WiFi play. But then again, we have AT&T DSL Lite, a very slow connection of itself.

Then do it, you definitely will not be sorry.

Interesting follow up. This morning I turned off the Wii wireless, it is the only thing that has changed since the getting knocked off line and I had a hunch that that might be the culprit, until I posted here, and all your problems with the WRT54G. Anyhow, back to the issue, or....lack of. My wireless has been stable all day. Two others in this thread have mentioned the Wii. Sounds like a little issue of incompatability.....hmmm.

Boy I feel geeky.

Hello,

Dumping the Linksys for another Small business - home office class switch router may not be a bad idea. As a general statement you'd want to stay current with your firmware packages. Most of the network gear I work with consist of Cisco and Fortinet. I've never owned a linksys and it pissed me off with Cisco put their name on them. I'll save that rant for another day.

In any rate - I have a comcast business line at work that doesn't go through our company firewall so I put a cheap linksys wireless router behind it and I experience the same problems you do. I've never cared to waste the time to troubleshoot.

You could be seeing interferance from other wireless devices in your ( cordless phone, wii, xbox 360, neighbor's access points. You may want to try changing the channel on your access point. The default is 6 or 7 I believe for the US.

I've also seen this before when using 128 Bit encryption keys and/or mac filtering for wireless security. Your client machine ( in this case your PC ) disassociating with your access point and making a reconnection attempt ( thus you lossing your connection )

If switching wireless channels or firmware updates do not work i'd try to disable mac filtering.

Sorry for the rant- Just thinking of things off the top of my head.

Check to see if your home SSID is set as the default. I don't know how the linksys client works but the windows client will make an attempt to connect to a closer access point of you do not have a "preferred SSID" defined.

My .001 cents.

Keep the linksys, they are actually a great piece of hardware. However, the firmware is bunk... which is why they started supporting the DD-WRT program. DD-WRT is GREAT replacement firmware. The router will run better than it ever did before and it has alot more options. My WRT54G was locking up daily but once I upgraded it to DD-WRT there have been no problems. tnelson also has some good suggestions - but I think DD-WRT should be your first solution.

Well, I'm actually somewhat of a geek, but must admit, I'm lost as to what to download. Bewildering array of files on there.

I see that version 24 is last release, so followed links to:

as I have wrt54GS, version 5.

There are still 8 or so .bin files there, with no explanation as to what they are, so have no idea which is the actual firmware to get?

Maybe the "broadcom" dir is not even what I should be in?

Win XP, but that doesn't really seem to matter?

Yep, I felt like a guy in the middle of the ocean in a inner tube.

By the way, turning off the Wii wireless corrected the problem. Guess they don't play well with each other.

I'm not having any particular probs, just some delays now and then, and that might be ComCast itself, dunno; already updated to newest LinkSys firmware, but thought I'd try this DD-WRT, but since I can't figure what to download, guess I won't.
