That is great news. You will be eating good for the next year!
-
Congratulations! You've got some good meals ahead to look forward too!

30-06 is usually the caliber with the most boxes on the shelf in my neck 'o the woods and usually at a good price compared to some others. I shoot 150 gr. Winchester Super-x Power-point.

Good luck to you and your son

I'm on a mountain lease around 2000 acres in unit B. Some is pretty rough some not so much. There's lots of pine thickets and undergrowth but quite a bit of hardwood mixed in. The deer always end up in the thickets after the rut from all the hunting pressure. It'll get harder from now until Jan 8th. It seems they just run from thicket to thicket like rabbits. I wish could get on a lease in the valley, or a farm somewhere but they are hard to find. But, like I said, I'm out there because I love it and another deer will be another bonus.

Yep. It's right at 2 miles along a rough and rutted mountain logging road. Too far for my 63 year old body with 3 knee surgeries, 2 shoulder surgeries and 2 ankle surgeries....LOL. I'm hunting for my enjoyment and because I love being out there, really. A deer would be a bonus! I did get one on muzzleloader and have 40lbs of meat in the freezer. I also have a doe tag this year so I'm hoping for 1 or 2 more before January 8th.

I hit the woods this morning with the last drops of rain hitting the dirt road into my lease. Unloaded the 4 wheeler and drove to the first ledge below the top of the mountain. I saw nary a deer. About 11:30 I headed back to the truck for some lunch. I drove the 4 wheeler about 100 yards and saw 2 sets of tracks that were in the tracks of my ride in this morning ....I saw a few other tracks crossing the road on the 2 mile trek back to the truck. THEN, about 150 yards from where I parked the truck, and again in the tracks I made going IN....was 2 sets of doe tracks and 1 set of what I've always considered buck tracks. You know, spread wide at the front with dew claw marks at the back. ...!!! They wuz really moving around this morning but I was sitting in the wrong place I reckon. I'm taking tomorrow off since it's suppose to storm most of the day, but will be back at it Thursday!! It seems the deer are running from thicket to thicket on top. I guess I'll just have to set up in the thickets and hope one comes by.

Venison Recipes. What's Your Favorite?
Randall53 replied to Randall53's topic in Hunting and Fishing
That sounds really good. We do country style steaks pretty often. Thanks. I'll give your recipe a try. -
When I've had venison on the past, I usually either used the 'ol grill for steaks and the crock pot for roasts. I don't have a smoker but I've used my grill to do that at times so I've got those 3 covered I think. Since I've now got around 40lbs of meat in my freezer (and hoping for more!) I thought maybe we could share some of our favorites here. One of mine is potatoes and onions quartered, baby carrots whole, a venison roast all covered with water. Bring 'er to a boil and add some Natures Seasoning and a quarter cup of worchester sauce. Cut her back to low and cook in a crock pot all day. Also have a pot of pintos that finish cooking about the same time as the roast with cornbread and some good 'ol southern hot chow chow.

If recent tradition holds true, the Alumni will be calling for Butches head on a platter any day now, and it will be time for us to jump into the "musical chairs for a new head coach" game. Dang....3 head coaches since Fulmer was fired in 2008. Well, Maybe not....we'll soon see. On that note, how long should a new head coach be allowed to build a team?

A lesson about pursuit of a BG?
Randall53 replied to Randall53's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
It would be hard not to pursue in that situation, but I'm thinking it would be the smart thing. If he hadn't chased the BG's, the shot's from outside (which could have hit anyone inside the home maybe?) may not have happened. -
A lesson about pursuit of a BG?
Randall53 replied to Randall53's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
True...but the actions performed during a like event here in TN could have a similar outcome. Could it not? You're sharp on the law OS. Is pursuit of a BG legal in TN after they've left your home? -
A lesson about pursuit of a BG?
Randall53 replied to Randall53's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
This was 2 years ago, but it seemed to be an event to learn from. He obviously pursued the BG's after they had left the premises. It'd be interesting to see how this actually turned out. -
This seems to follow Tennessee law according to my CCW class. Am I wrong? Home Invader Dies, But Homeowner May Be In Trouble....

I just opened it up and thought "WOW!!! I LIKE IT".....I vote a thumbs up It's MUCH easier to read and the avatars seem to be larger also.

That's almost word for word what I was going to post. Especially this: "I am also armed whenever I go to neutral well lit and public meeting places.". I've been using CL for close to 10 years now and have sold/bought cars, motorcycles and more "stuff" than I could remember. I am very careful and also use a vetting process before I think about making contact. If anything sounds fishy or I don't like the attitude or demeanor of the seller/buyer, I refuse to meet and cancel out. I too never allow a meeting to occur at my home, I often go early to the meeting location and scout out the other party before they know I'm there. Might sound like I overdo it, but we all know the stories and it can be dangerous. I have gotten some good deals though.

Sam Stoner's Outback Forge in Scottsville, KY
Randall53 replied to Wilson002s's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
Yep....I'd buy a GT knife before a Stoner. anytime......and I hope to get one one day. -
WOW.....where the heck was that and what was it all about? It looks like the bullet sponge had a handgun also, but never got a round off since the dude with the girl opened up on him.

DIY Plywood 4 wheeler rack. Has anyone done this?
Randall53 replied to Randall53's topic in Hunting and Fishing
I think that is what I need Hozzie. Cheap and easy to make also. I may just give that a try. Thanks and thanks for all the comments. -
DIY Plywood 4 wheeler rack. Has anyone done this?
Randall53 replied to Randall53's topic in Hunting and Fishing
That would work for some of the smaller valley leases, but I hunt on a 1800 acre mountain lease and sometimes I'm a couple of miles from my truck. That would pretty much ruin the meat dragging it along a rock, gravel and rutted road for that distance. I've figured out how to get it up there. pretty easy, just need some more room. -
My 4 wheeler is a 450 Grizzly which is a mid size vehicle. I'm wanting some more room (not a lot, just 3 more inches on each side) on the rear rack and I'm thinking about making a removable bolt on piece of 1/2" plywood for the back rack and drilling a few holes around the outside edge for tying things on.....like deer LOL. The small buck I got during muzzleloader season made me think of this. A larger deer would be very hard to get on the existing rack. I am aware of the leverage this would put on the back, but I could still tie one on towards the front. SO.......that being said, has anyone done this? If so, how did it work out? If you have time sometime and could post a pic, that would be great.

My prayer tonight will be for a safe and happy Thanksgiving for everyone here and their families and for our country. I'll also be saying an additional prayer for those that are serving in the military and are away from their families keeping us safe here at home.
