  1. A novel, yet effective, friction-type caller you can build is the box turtle or terrapin shell call. The sounding chamber is an empty, dry terrapin shell topped with a sheet of slate or red cedar. The striker is a red cedar or hardwood peg topped with a corncob. Materials: One empty and dried box turtle shell. One piece of 1/8-inch red cedar or slate for the sounding board (approximately 3" x 6", depending on length and width of shell). One five-inch long piece of 3/8-inch hardwood or red cedar dowel rod for a striker. One dried corn cob. Procedure: Cut and sand the sounding board into a shape that fits the length and width of the shell. Round or oval shapes work well and look good. Lay the sounding board across the open underside of the shell and mark the points where the sounding board rests against the shell - the contact points. Dab epoxy at three of these contact points and press the sounding board to the shell long enough for the epoxy to set. Taper the corn cob with sander or sharp knife. Trim the cob length to about 4 1/2 inches. Drill the center of the cob and drive the dowel rod peg into length of the cob, leaving about 2 1/2 inches of peg exposed. The fit must be snug. Note: Length and weight of peg and cob can be altered, resulting in tone variation. Try several lengths and weights.
  2. A buddy of mine made one from a box turtle shell and a piece of slate. It worked great. I will try and ask him how he made it. I have seen the wing bone call.
  3. Hey thanks for the post on how to tan a hide.
  4. Yeah thats how I took it. Glad it made sense.
  5. Mike seems to be very interested and so am I. Any good info will be great.
  6. Found this. I don't hunt over bait so I never really checked into this maybe I should have. Can I hunt over bait in Tennessee?</SPAN> 70-4-113 (a) states that it is unlawful for any person at any time to make use of any pitfall, deadfall, cage, snare, trap, net, baited hooks, poison, chemicals, explosives, set guns, spotlights, electric lights or torches, bait, which includes any grain, or mixture of any ingredients, used as or for food purposes, or other devices for the purpose of killing, injuring, or capturing any birds or animals protected by the wildlife laws of this state, except as otherwise expressly provided. It is TWRA's policy to permit the use of salt in both loose and block form, provided the majority (i.e., at least 51% by weight) of the formulation consists of salt or other minerals, then the formulation is not considered bait. Proclamation 07-04 (7) states that hunting over a site where bait has been placed to feed wildlife is prohibited unless the bait has been removed at least 10 days prior to hunting. This is directly for Coyotes. Will have to dig further unless someone else knows. Coyotes Can coyotes be hunted year around with a centerfire rifle? No they cannot. Private land: Season open year-round, 30-minutes before sunrise to 30-minutes after sunset. Legal equipment: During big game seasons, a legal big game hunter may hunt with what is legal during the particular big game season. If not licensed to big game hunt, shotguns with #4 shot or smaller, rimfire rifles, muzzleloaders, and archery is allowed. Other than during big game seasons, all rifles (centerfire or rimfire), muzzleloaders, archery, shotguns with T (0.20 inch diameter) or smaller shot may be used. Possession of firearms is prohibited while chasing coyotes with dogs from the first Saturday in November through the end of the deer season. Wildlife Management Areas: The season is open when another small game or big game season is open. Legal equipment: When the small game season is open – equipment legal for hunting the small game that is open. When the big game seasons is open – coyotes may be taken by legal big game hunters with any big game equipment and ammunition that is legal for the season open. Is it legal to use an electronic call to hunt coyotes? Yes. It is legal to use an electronic call (during daylight hours only) for all game species except for fox, wild turkey, and waterfowl. This was taken from TWRA web site. I think over dead animals that have died and not moved it is legal, but if you place bait it is illegal. Kinda like deer hunting it is legal to hunt over a field that has been planted for agriculteral purposes, but if you place corn in the same field it is consider baiting. Hope I am making sense.
  7. It is not illegal to hunt over dead animals. As far as baiting I don't think it is illegal but I will check. You can sell the hides but I kill them and throw them in the ditch or give them to someone who wants them.
