  1. Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the board.
  2. For a first time you've picked a good forum!
  3. Glad your with us!
  4. Let me start by asking you a question: Is it the platform your interested in (1911 verses M&P) or is it the caliber (.45 verses 9mm)? The reason I ask is that you have made both statements. I agree if the M&P isnt what you want than by all means get what your most comfortable with and like! But you do know that M&Ps come in .45 caliber, right? Mine has a 4.5" barrel. If you dont have any experience with it you are more than welcome to shoot it if you would like to try it out. I have a .45 caliber M&P with a 4.5" barrel, it is what I carry daily.
  5. Very well said! +1! Congrats - here's hoping you never need it.
  6. Nice! The hammer is interesting, too!
  7. Only 3 Kleenex Kev? Ya must be gettin' old buddy!
  8. Welcome aboard! I won't tell you what part of N'ville I live in (yes, I am a little ashamed lol)
  9. Glad you've made it to TGO.
  10. Welcome!
  11. Really David? Dang, I was all set to get a 550 (well when I get it, which is sorta low on my list right now, trying to buy a house). Can you ball park a price for me if I have everything I need now, as I am reloading pistol only, using a Rock Chucker (2). In fact everything I have is RCBS, if that matters.
  12. I had a set of Truglo TFOs installed on my S&W M&P for $30. I live in Nashville and drove to Springfield to have it done... long drive but the smith did it while I waited and he let me change my striker block while he was doing the rear site. He is a good guy and an excellent smith. I have seen people offer to do it for free on here. I would prefer to pay someone that A) knows what he is doing and has insurance. Probably to far for you but PM if you want his contact info.
  13. I bought a Neos Inox (which is Italian for stainless) with a 6" barrel. I bought it for my daughter to shoot (she was 12 when I got it). The grips are a bit diminutive, even for her but she is anything but diminutive (at 13 now she is about 5' 9") and she handles it well. The good news is that she never has trouble working the slide on it which she did with my buddies Ruger. The only ammo problem I have had was with the Remington Thunder bulk box (550 rounds) just like the Ruger had problems with. The important thing, to me, is that she is able to deal with the problem rounds now! The trigger may not be the best but I don't think its the worst I have ever felt on a gun, not by a long shot! Its smooth but it is a bit heavy (and a touch to much pull, if you ask me). I would buy another one, if that says anything.
  14. Way back when I was in the Navy I was able to carry an expired Arkansas drivers license (and active duty ID card) for 2 or 3 years until I went back to Arkansas the first time. Some states really do make a few things easier because your in the military. Like gregintenn said - thank you!
  15. I am loading 4.2 grains of Titegroup under a 115 grain Zero FMJ, using CCI 500 primers @ 1.125" OAL. I had been using Unique and it was a real pita in a Uniflow (not to mention it was dirty as crap!)... the ball of TG was AWESOME! I had seriously thought about using W231 as I have heard good things about it.
  16. I was at OK Corral range last weekend (if you've never been it is an AWESOME place! Woodbury is a 2 hour drive for me and very much worth it) and my 9 stopped picking up the next round. Doing it manually worked fine. I think I was driving my slide to fast... maybe I used to must grease on the slide? lol Seriously, I have read that ball powder is very susceptible to temperature changes but what does it do? When I was shooting my test loads in an indoor range it worked perfectly (even with .4 grains more powder, in them). This happened last Saturday which was a very cool day (temp in the 30s or 40s) so if its cooler outside does the powder burn more potently?
  17. Really? Good on ya! But that has not been my experience with them.
  18. I was told by "MY dealer" a month or 2 ago that Outpost Armory (south of Murfreesboro) had gotten about 15 Ruger's. No clue if A) that was true, but I would trust him with my life and I am highly doubtful that they would still have any but, its worth a phone call.
  19. When I joined the US Navy (those many years ago) standard issue was a Remington 870 and a few years latter it was the Mossburg 500. I was lately told by a former Gunner's Mate not to long ago that the main reason the Navy changed to the Mossburg was because the safety was on the top\rear of the receiver (verses behind the trigger guard) and thus more easy to see. Both are good weapons and will do an excellent job for home defense. At the same time if the SHF it wouldn't bother me 1 iotia to use my 65 year old Browning Auto 5 filled with bird shot.
  20. Nevermind! lol graycrait thanks for starting this!
  21. I was explaining to a coworker why this site is so good, as he was asking me questions about reloading for a riffle (of which I have never done). It dawned on me what the crimp MAY BE for... Please keep in mind - wild ass guess (WAG) here! Since a 9mm indexes off of the mouth of the case they don't want to put a taper crimp in it, to ensure it works in a wide variety of firearms (least they get bad-mouthed on some message board, after all) but they absolutely do not want to allow the bullet to compress into the case (exploding and of course, being bad-mouthed on some message board), so the perfect compromise would be a crimp on the base of the bullet. IDK, just a guess.
  22. +1 to dubaholic2 and +1 to Dave Shooter That is a pair of great ideas!
  23. It may be. I can't say that I have ever seen them as pronounced as that Corbin round, I'm looking at some Glaser Pow'rball in 9mm and they aren't.
