  12. ok so i did my testing and here is what i found, i am attaching a picture and all 3 wires are numbered 1,2,3 now when i put the + lead on wire 3 and the - lead on wire 1 i get a reading of 88.8v, when i put the + lead on wire 3 and the - lead on wire 2 i get 10v and last when i put the leads on wires 1 and 2 i get a reading of 124v
  13. ok which would be best/safest testing with the power on or off, i dont mind either way
  14. i will unhook the wires again tomorrow and test some more and see what i find
  15. if i try that i will need to desolder the red and white wires but it is worth a shot unless someone else comes up with something else
  16. if you mean the light switch no, if you mean the fuse box that i dont know
  17. correct, though i turned the light off and put both leads on the black wires and got about 125v   EDIT: this is the meter i have http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Commercial-Electric-HDM-4400-Digital-Multimeter-23-Range-7-Function-/151059804889 its a cheapy not one of those nice $100+ fluke meters
  18. just tried my multi meter and the only thing that happend was it flashed 1 and beeped on every wire i put it on
  19. power off and the two wires look to be soldered together   yes i do
  20. that is why i am replacing light switches
  21. have tried that aswell, i have switched the wires every way i can think of and still no dice
  22. when one switch is off the other switch does not work at all
  23. i have tried that way and it still gives issues
  24. Ok here's the pictures from the switch at the bottom of the stairs, it has one yellow wire one red wire and one black wire, there is a red and white wire wrapped in black tape behind the switch upstairs
  25. i dont have any wire long enough to do that but i will take some pictures of the other switch if that may help i do understand and i understand what everyone else here is saying, but no matter which way i am asked to try, the switch just wont work right, this house is really old and from the switch it looks like it used to turn something else on and off
