It would be great if journalists actually did their job to investigate this. What happened to the man who was caught in the woods? We saw the police around him from the news helicopter video. Yet he hasn't been mentioned at all since. Who was the man the kid in the local TV interview (and the police on the scanner) said was "proned" and in handcuffs outside the school? There is so much hysteria over guns, no one is trying to tie up these loose ends. This would be a great opportunity for some young enterprising reporter to make an name for him/herself by ferreting out the facts on this.

Where are all of the pro- gun voices?
jgradyc replied to superduty's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Everyone is too emotional to have a rational discussion now. It's better to wait until more time passes and more facts come out. For example, nearly every mass shooter has been taking prescription drugs that can have violent side effects. The Aurora shooter was taking Vicodin. Eventually, we'll learn that this kid was also on some mood altering drug. Read about it here. http://www.cchrint.org/2012/07/20/the-aurora-colorado-tragedy-another-senseless-shooting-another-psychotropic-drug/ -
It's come out that this kid had some sort of personality disorder. I wonder if he was on medication and had stopped taking it? Some of those powerful drugs have been linked to suicides in the past. It's even on the warning labels. Hopefully, more details on this will come out when more information is available. This is the only thing that even remotely makes sense.

Good call. One handgun, yeah, I could see a single woman having a firearm for home defense, but three? And one of them a bushmaster (by some reports). That's really not a firearm you see many women buying. I know that there are probably a few women into AR-15 type guns, but not many. It's really more appealing to young men.

7 year old boy shot dead outside gun store.
jgradyc replied to Jesse's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Hopefully, someone will comment on the news article with more details. Just based on what we can read so far, he broke so many handgun safety rules that I have trouble counting them all. -
Mother wants debt inherited from dead son's loans forgiven.
jgradyc replied to maroonandwhite's topic in General Chat
Gee, you'd think that out of those 200,000 people who signed the petition to forgive a measly $10,000+ loan, someone would have thought, "Hey, if she just sends an email to these 200,000 people asking for a paypal donation of 25 cents to a charitable fund set up online to pay off the debt, she could potentially raise $50,000... enough to pay off the debt and support the two-year-old for a while." Instead, everyone gets wrapped around the axle about what is fair or not fair. Guess what... life is not fair. It's been over two years. It's time to quit feeling sorry for yourself and do something. -
When I was a kid, my dad made me use a 22LR bolt action rifle with open sights. He said anyone can get a squirrel with a shotgun, but it takes skill to shoot one with open sights with a 22LR.
^^This. In spite of the recommendations for 20 and even 12 gauge, you want this to be fun. You don't want him to shoot a few 20 gauge rounds wrong at target practice, wake up with a sore shoulder and never shoot again. A 22 is a great gun to learn on. If you go shotgun, why not get a single shot 410 and then get him a pump 20 when he outgrows it? If you buy a used gun, it won't depreciate much.

Best Buy's Deal of the Day for today (11/20/12) is a 60" Sharp TV. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Misc/null/pcmcat248000050016.c?id=pcmcat248000050016&ref=167&loc=02 for $699.

You might want to consider TigerDirect. I get their Daily Deal newsletter. It's usually computers and laptops, but sometimes it's a tv. They have a $1,400 Samsung 60" for $847 with no tax and free shipping. Personally, I wouldn't go out in the Black Friday mess, but to each his own... maybe if it were half price... Oh, by the way, I think Insignia is the Best Buy store brand. I don't know who makes it for them. I was told when I bought my tv, but I can't remember. We bought a plasma because the blacks were really black... big mistake. It looked great in the store, but we have a well lighted room with lots of windows and the picture is almost invisible on a sunny day until we close the curtains.

Inside Waist Band Carry uncomfortable.
jgradyc replied to Jesse's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
After trying several IWB holsters, they're all uncomfortable to me. My best bet is a North Face Denali vest for the next few months and my OWB. The preppie North Face vest doesn't scream GUN like a hunting/fishing/quilted/outdoor vest and is light enough to be worn indoors. I looked in a couple of stores yesterday and couldn't find one. I know they have them at Outdoor World at Opry Mills mall, but they'll probably be $100 there. I guess I'll check out the rest of the mall one of these days. -
It occurs to me that those short home defense shotgun shells would be a great way to increase the capacity and reduce the recoil of an inexpensive pump shotgun. I don't currently own a 12ga pump for home defense because my wife can't handle the recoil. I'm guessing these short shells have less felt recoil? Is that true? Will the Mossberg/Maverick/Pardner/870 shotguns cycle them? Oh, and where can I buy these short shells?

I love solving puzzles. There's no way I can think of communicate reliably over that distance. One alternate approach would be to preplan a time to meet if phone service is down. Another option would be to leave a written message or agreed upon signal hidden at a location a mile or so away from the designated point. In this case, there's no need to have code. Stick a message inside an empty beer can and leave it a predetermined spot by a tree or sign. Or you could agree to communicate by two-way at 5 minute after the hour every hour from a mile or so away. Or you could just meet him at the nearest Waffle House.

I think my local WalMart has some 12ga pump short barrel for $179 right now. I can't remember the brand. It wasn't Mossberg or one of the big names.

In sales, I was taught to create an "elevator speech" on what I did for a living in the time it takes for an elevator to get to your chosen floor... maybe 15-30 seconds. You practice the spiel until you get it perfect. It's a good idea to have pre-planned spiel that you can give anyone anytime should they ask about handgun carry. I have one for a neutral situation, one for a mildly confrontational situation like this one, and one should I be questioned by law enforcement. I even practice them on occasion so I don't inadvertently say something stupid if provoked. Further, I have two very personal stories I can tell in 30 seconds or so that would end most hostile conversations. The first one begins, "I've only needed to have a gun once..." and the other one begins, "My sister called to tell me my cousin had been murdered..."

My late aunt nailed this 10 years ago. She was as conservative as any person I've ever met, but she said this. "Republicans need to drop this whole abortion issue. Too many people are one-issue voters." Tuesday, Romney lost the single women vote... 68% voted for Obama. The analysts won't have the numbers projected until December, but that's literally millions of voters.

It's pretty hard for politics to trigger civil unrest when the average person is more interested in American Idol than politics. I was at a rural gas station for early morning coffee the morning after the election and struck up a conversation with several guys. Most seemed to be saying, whatever... they're all crooks. Then one guy asks, "What did you think of the election?" I was disappointed, I replied. He said he was on the other side. He paused and then said, "I just can't support that gay marriage thing." I was dumbfounded. What could I say? Um, sir, you have the candidates' positions wrong. The guy you voted for is the guy who supports gay marriage. What can we do when we have voters who are ignorant of the most basic positions? BTW, the whole gay marriage is a non-issue for me personally... that's just what he said.

Definition: Pathological or compulsive hoarding is a specific type of behavior characterized by: acquiring and failing to throw out a large number of items that would appear to have little or no value to others (e.g., papers, notes, flyers, newspapers, clothes) severe cluttering of the person's home so that it is no longer able to function as a viable living space significant distress or impairment of work or social life Based on this definition, and the fact that used firearms tend to appreciate in value, it would be hard to "hoard" firearms unless it interfered with your normal day-to-day life, although a prosecuting attorney would probably argue that six would qualify you as a borderline psychopath.

I like the way Glocks look, but never liked how they felt in my hand. The grip tilts my hand down in an awkward angle. On a whim, I bought a Gen2 17 (or 19... don't remember) and didn't like it. It was too big for my hand. My neighbor has a 17 in a Serpa holster. I tried it and after pushing the retention pad on the holster, my finger was too short to hit the front of the trigger guard and brushed the trigger. I told him that the holster was completely unsafe. He assured me that it was fine. Whatever. Recently, I bought a Gen4 G26 because the grip was smaller. The trigger is funny. It has a "bump" before the safety trigger will move. I've ordered a Gen3 trigger to fix that problem. I don't think Glocks like me...

ParamedZ2, rules are rules, nothing personal against you since you were just asking. I'd urge you to become a benefactor so you can post your handgun in the classified section... It's real easy and worth the nominal cost. Plus, it gives you a little extra credibility should you want to buy something in the classifieds. At first, I was leery of meeting strangers, but I've met nothing but really nice people here. Dealers have to make a profit when they resell your gun so you won't get much as trade in should you try that route. I'd suggest you go to a gun show so you can handle all sorts of handguns to see what works for you. Sometimes, the specs make the gun look perfect, but it feels entirely different in your hand. If you have a big gun dealer near you, you could check out the firearms there and ask questions. My first EDC was great in every respect... shot great, great trigger, and looked awesome... except I couldn't carry it. It was too big and too heavy for me. That was a few guns ago... but it was a good lesson to learn. By the way, I make a point to only meet in daylight in a parking lot with video cameras or in a rural cafe that's really gun friendly. Call me paranoid... On the other hand, if it was with someone with 4,000 plus posts, I'd be happy to meet elsewhere.

Ah, I found it. Here is the Muslim strategy as the percentage of Muslims increase within a nation. Whether this is a "real" strategy or just the reality... I don't know. For those who don't have the time to look, it's basically... as the percentage of Muslims increase in a nation, their demands become increasingly militant. http://www.rapturenotes.com/islam-strategy.html

Thanks for the link. We're retired military and qualify for those deals, but I don't think I would have ever found that site on my own.

You might want to read this. It's the Islamic four stages of conquest. I've seen other articles that added a percentage of the population that would need to be reached for Islam to move to the next stage, but I couldn't find it. http://civilusdefend...lamic-conquest/ EDITED: The US is in stage one with some stage two steps. Western Europe is in stage two.

I've checked out one or two pawn shops and I was shocked to see the prices. Firearms were close to new prices when they were well worn... not to mention you have no idea of whether they will shoot reliably or not. Anyone have any recommendations for Nashville pawn shops that carry firearms. Most in my area don't carry weapons except those silly throwing stars and such.

Welcome! This group has been helpful to me so don't hesitate to post your questions. You might want to ask about training classes. Of course, the HCP class is a must if you plan to carry, but you'd probably benefit from a basic firearm safety course. I don't know where or if such a course exists in Murfreesboro, but maybe someone here can suggest something. Novices, Glocks, and accidental discharges seem to be correlated. Good luck and welcome to a really enjoyable pastime.

I've joined a couple of national forums recently and I've seen numerous comments about buying used handguns at lower prices than I've seen here in Tennessee. Example: Kel Tec P11 $150-$200, Hi Points $75, Glocks $400. These are the only ones I can remember. Maybe they are exceptions. Or, maybe I just need to go to local gun shows and hang out. For people who have priced used guns elsewhere, are they really cheaper or are these examples aberrations? And another question, I know we cannot buy/sell handguns out of state of residence without FFL transfer, but what about shotguns and long guns?
