  1. Can anyone recommend any good fiction novels about the loss of the power grid?  It is the most likely scenario.  Next most likely would be an uncontrolled outbreak of a deadly airborne virus.
  2. How would a two-year old be able to pull the trigger on a handgun? Wouldn't it have to be a pretty light... say less than 6 lb... trigger pull?
  3. I went to M L Rose in Nashville a few weeks ago and had a great draft ale. It's on Charlotte Ave across from the Post Office. Sorry, I can't remember what the ale was.
  4. My peeve is that no one makes a decent looking station wagon. My 2000 Subaru Legacy Outback has sports suspension and handles great.  It's more fun to drive and easier to maneuver than a big SUV, but I can carry my bikes without even removing the front wheel. I still like the looks.   I got the itch  to buy a new (used car but new to me) car a couple of years ago. I keep looking as I'm driving around, but I really don't see anything I like better. Most newer cars all look about the same to me.
  5. This ebola scare is way, way overblown.  It's just the media hyping the crisis-du-jour. It's not airborne. You have a greater risk of being killed by an escaped zoo animal than contracting ebola.
  6. I've been getting calls all day from a local number (615 area code... same as mine).  No one says anything. If I say hello, there is dead air. I set the phone down and it was still connected three minutes later. If I say nothing, the line hangs up in about 10 seconds.  I tried calling the number back (since it was a 615 area code) and got a message "the number you have called is no longer in service?"    Any idea what is going on?  The number is 615-XXX- 0706. They've called four times today (Saturday.).
  7. Couldn't you sew up the area where the holster stretched to keep the barrel from extending out of the holster?
  8. My neighbor recently installed a nice outdoor video surveillance camera system for his home and outdoor buildings.  He has had problems with break-ins in the past, including one this summer.   I suggested that he put up video surveillance signs in some obvious locations, but he apparently thinks it would tip off potential thieves.  What's your opinion?
  9. For me, it's CC.  I wouldn't carry $600 in cash sticking out of my hip pocket for everyone to see... it's too much of a target of opportunity. I'm not physically strong enough or big enough (or young enough ) to defend myself if someone tries to take my weapon.  I saw a thief snatch a woman's purse once just walking down the mall, so it could happen. Of course, I know everyone who OCs is ninja-fast so it wouldn't be a problem for you.   I'll stick with OWB with a shirt or light jacket cover.
  10. +1
  11. I'd consider  a fancy mag carrier, but not a fancy-shamansky mag carrier... umm, what's a mag carrier?
  12. I'm attempting to read Apocalypse Drift by Joe Nobody... 60 Kindle pages in and I'm probably going to give up on this one.  The characters aren't very interesting or particularly likable. There's no super villain or protagonist to pull against.  I can't recommend this one.
  13. Get some comfortable ear protectors.  Start with a gun with little recoil. Have her dry fire a few times to get the feel of the trigger pull.  Teach her how to look through the sights. How to breathe. How to hold the weapon.   After she's comfortable, you can move up to something with more noise and recoil.   A gun that fits her hand, has an easy trigger pull, and a relatively long sight picture would be easiest to learn on.  That should be obvious, but a lot of guys think that a 10 pound trigger pull is nothing.
  14. Merkur Progressive Merkur 34C Tea tree oil soap Personna Red blades   I switched to the 34c about 6 years ago. At first, I tried all the expensive soaps and brushes, but I didn't care for them. I've settled on homemade soaps that include some type of oil. I wet my face, wet the bar of soap, run the soap over my face, and the rub the soap into a lather. It's a lot faster than the brush and lather approach and works slightly better, in my opinion.  I get my soaps from a flea market in Florida, but I've seen similar soaps at the Farmers Market in Nashville and at Whole Foods.    After I realized the double edge was a much better shave, I bought the Merkur Progressive. I use the 3 setting on the Progressive with a 3-4 day growth and the 2 or 1.5 setting for a daily shave. I've tried a half dozen different brands of blades. I cut myself too often with Feather blades and I don't think I get quite as good a shave with them.   I always shave twice. The first time with the grain, the second time across the grain or against the grain to get a closer shave.
  15. This looks like a publicity move to me. There's no way this bike fits the existing Harley Davidson culture.  Honda, yes, it would work for them.
  16. I've never found a IWB holster that was comfortable enough to wear, but based on the positive reviews I decided to give the Alien Gear a try. It's well-built and very adjustable, but unfortunately for me, these types of holster just don't fit by body size. I can't find a belt/pant/cant combination that is comfortable.  My waist is 30" and EDC is an M&P 9mm Shield. I ordered a Kydex shell for my Kahr PM9 and I'll try it with that gun next.
  17. I ordered on 12May and received notice of shipment Monday, four weeks exactly from the date of my order.  Based on previous posts that say it's made with thick leather and thick Kydex, I might not like it. I don't like thick holsters, but otherwise reviews have been great, so I'm willing to give it a try. It should arrive this week.
  18. They weren't parallel to the body. They were short and almost vertical, like the stripes on a zebra.
  19. Thanks for the opinions. I asked the wife about it this morning and she said she didn't have the dogs with her, so that explains why no dog reaction. She said she didn't smell anything like cucumber, but she has a limited sense of smell, so that's not much to go on.    This was by a creek in some dead limbs on the ground. It was moving away from her when she saw it.  We do have some poisonous snakes in the area.  My neighbor saw a timber rattler about 300 yards from this spot a couple days ago.  But she's sure the snake she saw had no rattles.     I'm amazed at how different snakes of the same species can look.
  20. The wife was out walking the dogs by a pile of dead branches by a creek when she almost stepped on the back end of a big snake.   The snake was thick-bodied, brown to reddish brown body with black parallel stripes on the side (like a zebra). The stripes did NOT go across the back of the snake. The back was more or less solid color. I can't find any pictures of snakes that meet this description, but a snake's markings can vary a lot so I thought someone here might have an idea of what it might be.   It did not have rattles... she was only a couple of feet away when she saw it.  She never saw the head of the snake, but the part of the body she saw was over three feet long.
  21. I just bought a new Yuasa battery for my Kawasaki Versys, but I'm unsure how to charge it. First, I add the acid, seal it, and connect the charger, but then it calls for charging at 1.2 amps for 5-10 hours. I don't have a 1.2 amp charger.  The instructions say, " If you are using an automatic type taper charger, check to make sure the charger amps is equal to or greater than the standard charging method (i.e., 1.2 amps).   The reviews of this battery were good EXCEPT some people destroyed the battery by charging it too fast, so I don't want to mess this part up.   I have a Black and Decker smart fully automatic battery charger (Model #BC40EB) that charges at 4/10/2040 amps. Will this work?   Or I could just buy a 1.5 amp maintenance charger with auto shut off. I could use it for the tractor after this application.
  22. I ordered on May 12th.  Looks like it's going to be a while longer. Status is still shown as "processing."
  23. Okay, I think you're right. The wording confused me.
  24. I don't want to come across as the grammar police, but all the references to .5% and .625% should be 5.0% and 6.25% respectively. Since it's a poison, I thought it would be worth pointing this out.  I appreciate the info from whiskey and I have a bag of Permethrin dust I might use on my garden.
  25. Oh, I forgot to mention the P3-AT is NOT fun to shoot. That's not to imply that it's painful to shoot. It's just not a gun I'd like to put a 100 rounds downrange every weekend. If that's a consideration for your EDC pocket carry, then you'd probably want to stay away from it or the LCP. It's a non-factor for me.
