Nope. I did a clean install months ago to install Windows 10 Technical Preview so there is no previous install information buried inside my OS. This ISO download has to have the Windows 10 product key or be installed over an activated version of Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10. I tried my Windows 8 product key. It didn't work. MS shouldn't make it this hard for their beta testers. I really don't want to reinstall windows 8, install the updates, and then install Windows 10. That'll take a whole day.

So, I can download the ISO, use it to load 10, and then use my Windows 8 product key to install it? P.S. I've been using Windows 10 Technical Preview since December. I like it a lot better than Windows 8. I added the Classic Shell, which looks a lot like Windows 7. Cortana might be great if you can't type, but it's slower than just typing in a search. Edge is, well, just another browser. I'll stick with Chrome because it has add-ons I use every day. Windows 10 boots a lot faster and didn't crash much until the last month or so before the launch.

I'm running Windows 10 preview build 10162. I went to update using instructions I'd been given and it just locked up. After an hour, I did a reset, which wiped the system and reinstalled Build 10162... only now it's not activated. I can't update it or update to Windows 10. It looks like I'll have to reinstall 8.0 and then reinstall Windows 10. From what I've read today, MS is really messing up this launch.

At this point, my question would be why are you investing all this time to get into an old XP system that you haven't been using? Get an XP install disk and reinstall XP. It'll be a lot quicker than what you're doing now. I'm pretty sure you can download XP from a torrent if you don't have an install disk. Better yet, just install a Linux distro. I'm running one of the older Linux Mint distros on my Dell Optiplex, which came with the XP OS. You make what's called a LiveDVD with the distro on it. Boot up the computer using the LiveDVD, hook up to the internet, and test whatever Linux distro you have to your heart's content. Once you're convinced you like it and everything works, then wipe the drive using the DVD's instructions and install your Linux distro. Linux Zorin OS looks a lot like Windows 7. Linux Mint is probably next most like Windows 7.

FYI... Groupon on CRKT Ken Onion knife
jgradyc replied to jgradyc's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
Okay, thanks. -
Hi Guys, Groupon has a one day deal on the CRKT Ken Onion knife... $34.99 with a claimed MSRP of $149.99. I'm debating getting one. What do you think of this deal? It ends midnight tonight, I think. https://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-crkt-limited-edition-ken-onion-wrinkle-2-knife-2

A college sophomore just made a flying handgun drone... just curious what everyone thinks about this. http://connecticut.cbslocal.com/2015/07/23/atf-flying-gun-drone/

Building computers? Are you hardwiring them to the modem or using a wifi card? It could be a problem with the wifi card. I'm guessing you've already figured that part out. Assuming you're booting from a LiveDVD, you should be able to log on to the internet without installing Linux on your hard drive. Linux Mint is my favorite distro, but I use Ubuntu as well. I don't care for the barebones distros. Zorin and Linux Mint have the look and feel of Windows 7. I'ver heard good things about Elementary OS, which is supposed to look and feel a lot like the Mac. Mint and Ubuntu are probably your best choices. Oh, and Red Hat has been discontinued for about a decade.

Carrying into someone's home?
jgradyc replied to Grayfox54's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Someone help me out here. Is this true? I thought the law was 1) You can't drink and carry... restaurants, bars, parties, etc. 2) You can't be intoxicated and carry... a blood alcohol content of greater than .08 percent. What about leaving one's gun in the car while having one beer with dinner and then reholstering when one gets back to the car? As long as you're under .08 and not impaired (tired, taking meds, etc) isn't that legal? -
I second the suggestion for a Kel Tec Sub 2000. The only problem I've had with mine is I didn't know how to adjust the front sight and I broke it. It was $4 I think to replace it. You can get them in various calibers to accept S&W, Beretta, and Glock mags.

I'm leaning towards the Hatsan 95 in .22 caliber after reading up on pellet guns. The trigger is supposed to be adjustable.
-
After looking through the ad, I didn't see much. I was thinking of something like the Gamo Silent Cat. It's $139 at WalMart. Trigger pull is really important. I have an old Chinese pellet gun that must have a 15-20 pound trigger.

I've wanted a pellet gun for some time, but I haven't researched them. MidwayUSA has some on sale this weekend. http://www.midwayusa.com/find?dimensionids=4294846723&newcategorydimensionid=16835&cm_vc=J012 Is there anything here I should be looking at? It would be for plinking. Maybe shooting nuisance birds. My only criteria is that it should be accurate at a reasonable pellet gun range. I'd like to stay under $150, but I could go higher if necessary for a great airgun.

After reading that lame test about how prepared are you, I thought TGO could do a lot better, so here's my scenario. How would you prepare for it with only $500? You think the power grid could go down at any moment. If the power goes down, there would be no gasoline, no electricity, and no running water for 12 months. You have $500 to spend for gear, plus what you already have on hand. What would you buy? If you aready have it, just say DONE after the listing. Those items DO NOT COUNT towards your $500. Also, assume that you have sufficient handguns, rifles, shotguns, ammo, and pocket knives, so don't list those either. Also, assume you have good boots and a backpack. If it's not obvious, explain why it's important. Here's how your list might look. Magnesium fire starters 10 at $3 apiece. Barter Candles DONE Butane fire sticks DONE 10 Butane fire sticks at $3 apiece Barter Old mountain bike and basic tools DONE Assorted seed packets for garden ~$20 Solar panel DONE 12v battery charger to charge AA AAA and 18650 batteries and ereader using solar panel DONE Nook ereader DONE SD card for ereader DONE Dozens of survival ebooks DONE Propane camp stove DONE Emergency supply of propane DONE Good ax... $40? 2-way radios with rechargeable batteries $70 Bleach 5 gallons (water purification) Barter $15 Canned goods Peanut butter Multiple flashlights DONE Flashlight red lens or red LED DONE So far, I've only spent about $200
-
Pretty lame test... I scored a 20. Lots of items didn't make sense. What good is a ham radio if you don't have AC? What good are 2-way radios after the batteries run down?

My old Subaru died. First, the transmission started slipping, then a blown head gasket, then something went wrong with the electronics. I need to move it, but it's in Park and I can't start it. In order to get the shifter out of Park, the engine has to be running and my foot has to be on the brakes. I'd like to just roll it down the driveway to my barn, but I can't get it out of Park.

Good point. Just look at Eugene on The Walking Dead.

I grew up in South Carolina. My high school played Dixie at every pep rally and waved the confederate flag at every game. I thought nothing of it. I stood up and cheered like everyone else. I went away to college and my sophomore year, there was a big pep rally and some guys had a confederate flag. There was a fuss over it. I asked a black classmate what the deal was. He explained what the flag represented to blacks. That night, I went through all my belongings and threw away everything with a confederate flag on it. That was 1967... 48 years ago.

I agree with peejman and rugerla1, although "cardio" is a really broad area. If you aren't fit, just a weight circuit and Crossfit stuff is going to get your heart into the cardio zone. Consider alternating weights/Crossfit type stuff on one day and elliptical, spin, stairmaster or running on the other days. At least two or maybe three workouts a week should include something intense. High intensity, short duration exercises... weights, running, cycling... have been shown to boost testosterone levels. That's key to slowing the aging process and speeding up your metabolism to burn more calories. "High intensity" means 8 reps of 20 seconds sprinting uphill, 8 sets of 30 seconds sprinting on a spin bike, 8 reps of sprinting, or the Crossfit Tabata workout, which might be 8 sets of 20 seconds of squats with 10 second recovery between sets. Oh... and don't do Crossfit classes. It's fun, but an injury waiting to happen, at least it was for me.

thoughts on Surefire's IntelliBeam Technology
jgradyc replied to BigK's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
MSRP on the Streamlight P2X Fury is $155. The auto adjust sounds nice, but not for that price. There's no reason to pay that much for a flashlight anymore. Maybe 10 years ago... but not today. Technology has advanced to the point that you can get a good LED flashlight for less than $20. The Convoy M1 costs only $20. https://www.fasttech.com/products/1601/10002364/1212400-convoy-m1-cree-xm-l-u2-1b-2-group-35-mode-900lm-le The strobe mode can be switched off. It has a low, med, and hi modes of 5%, 40%, and 100%. It lights up my driveway enough to tell "deer or dog" at my mailbox 120 yards away. I walk at night with the Convoy S2 with the same LED bulb. It's a floody... the same power with a wider diffused beam. My keychain light is a ThruNite Ti with a 3.7v 14650 battery instead of a AAA. It puts out an amazing amount of light on high for such a small light. Cost was $20 or so. There is an LED flashlight forum that discusses flashlights and reviews them at www.budgetlightforum.com -
disabling 1911 grip safety (non-pinned style)
jgradyc replied to tercel89's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Unless you're planning to keep this gun forever, it will devalue it. I understand the rationale, but I'd just start with another gun without a grip safety. Or... I could see why someone might not want to have to completely depress the grip safety to engage the trigger. That could cause a problem in an extreme situation. It seems to me that any concern with the grip safety could be eliminated by modifying the grip safety to release it's lock with less physical depression of the grip piece. -
First Saturday of the month is exotic cars at the Cars and Coffee car show at the Thoroughbred 20 movie theatre parking lot in Franklin (Cool Springs). It's pretty impressive if you like exotic cars.

What's the board going for on eBay? Sometimes, parts are really cheap. I bought a WiFi card for $3 a while back.

On another topic, what can you do to avoid this happening in the first place? First, I customize my IWB and OWB holsters so the weapon will not fall out even if held upside down. Second, I only pocket carry with a holster that has been modified to stay in the pocket unless a concerted effort is made to remove it.
