  1. I'm the OP for this topic. Here's my thoughts after a few days. These aren't necessarily things I'm doing differently, but things I'm going to emphasize more from now on.   Maintain awareness.  Wear running shoes at all times. Run if possible. (I'm not LEO, not trained except for target practice, no need to be a hero, and very fast runner!) Hide (see above). Know where exits and cover are at all times. I just upgraded my "large" pocket carry from Kahr PM9 to Sig Sauer P938. (Great deal on Sigs right now from Northern Firearms on GunBroker... $579 for the P938 with factory laser.) Start carrying a spare mag. Go armed more often.
  2. Are you looking for air leaks? Like a drafty window or door? If so, use a long stick of incense. That's what I use. Just hold it close to the window, door, or whatever. As long as the smoke goes up, there's no draft. When the smoke gets blown away from the wall, it's a draft. If the smoke gets carried down, it's a strong draft.
  3. I think in a jury trial, a 67-old-woman would get special consideration for actions taken in self defense.    Besides, it says right on the label that smoking can be dangerous to your health.
  4. After the Aurora shooting in 2012, I had to rethink my primary carry.  Until then, I had been content in being able to hit a target at close (within 20 feet) range. The Aurora shooting combined with tear gas changed my approach. I now carry a handgun that I can shoot accurately at longer range with a laser for low light/impaired vision.    After San Bernadino, it might be time to rethink carry again. Going against two long guns is near suicide. Waiting until they reload would seem to be the best tactic. Not sure what other lessons to take away... your thoughts?
  5. It's probably the belt, but you shouldn't try to change it yourself. Yes, it's an easy job, but you don't sound like you know your way around an engine. It can also be a knuckle buster for a novice. Just call around and find someone to change a belt for you. You'll need to have the tensioners checked as well.
  6. Last I heard, she had a court date for early January, but that was news the first few days after the event. I've heard nothing since.
  7. This isn't about guns. It's about real estate development.  The gun show is merely the low-hanging fruit. It's hard to work up interest in banning arts and craft shows. Once they eliminate enough fairgrounds' revenue, they'll close the fairgrounds and develop it. I would bet that the mayor will benefit financially in some way from this real estate development.
  8. I watched the TV interview of her. She looked frail and talked like she was a little... something... senile? You know, the way some old people just sound... old?    I think she was truly frightened for her life.    Twenty years ago, I might act differently, but in today's world, I'm with you 100%.  If it were my wife or sister, I would want them to draw in this situation. I saw her TV interview with the local new station. She looked really frail. I truly believe her when she said she feared for her life. That doesn't condone her actions, but it should be enough to get her off with a warning. She's already being punished enough by having to defend herself in court. Who knows how much that will cost?
  9. No. I installed four of the cameras. I'm sure I would have noticed that.   With 8 cameras, the DVR defaults to a lower resolution to record all 8 cameras. This was not apparent in any of the sales literature. It was buried in the manual. This is part of the problem, but it's also a problem with the lens being wide angle. With a wide angle lens, things farther away are really tiny in the picture.
  10. This is a good idea. Most people buy treadmills with good intentions and then realize that it's harder to have the discipline to exercise regularly indoors on a treadmill than it is to exercise outside. If you can't exercise daily outside, you're not a good candidate to use a treadmill. It's not impossible... but it's just really hard.   While you're waiting for January, get outside and run/walk/jog/hike. If you not an exerciser, any of these activities can get your heart rate up. I'd suggest that you get a decent pair of running shoes and alternate running and walking for 15 minutes away from the house. Then, turn around and get home as best you can. I'd suggest one minute running and one minute walking at first.    You can then go one of two ways: Increase the time to 20 minutes out/back or increase the time running to 2 minutes running for one walking.   By the way, Vanderbilt Rec Center has a special $60 for 60 days membership from Dec 1 to Jan 31. They don't advertise it much, but it's a great way to use their multi-million dollar facility on the cheap. I ran on their indoor 300 meter track yesterday and will again on Wednesday.
  11. I have two questions. Some background first. My neighbor installed a Sams Club 8-camera security system with DVR. I helped him set it up. It has the remote monitoring app for his iPhone. Here's my concern. Even though the cameras are 1080p, the resolution is low and the wide angle makes everything so far away it's hard to see. You can't even tell what make a car is when it's in the driveway.  Basically, all you can tell is race and gender of a person. You could only ID a person if he came up to the porch camera and looked at it.   Now, at my house, I don't have security cameras, but I have a "Security Cameras in Use" sign on my gate. I offered one to my neighbor, but he said no. He doesn't want anyone to know he has security cameras. I think this is poor logic. I don't want to catch someone who breaks into my house. I want to deter them from breaking in in the first place. Besides, if his goal is to catch someone, this system isn't going to do it unless the guy comes up to his front door... the least likely break-in target on the house.   1. Is he right not to put up a security camera in use sign? 2. I think my sign does more to deter theft than his $500+ security system. What's your opinion? I'd consider a security camera system if I thought it offered a real value.
  12. A 1/4 mile range is impressive.  It works on humans as well as cars, right?  I have this system in the link below, but it sometimes gives false alarms due to cats or dogs getting close to the sensor. It claims a range of 800 feet. Maybe. My sensor is 400 feet from the house, but it has to be line of sight for it to work. The second one on our steps works fine through walls. Also, my neighbor's car sometimes doesn't trigger it. I'm guessing it's because the engine hasn't gotten hot enough to trigger the sensor in the short drive from the house next door. http://www.amazon.com/HA-434RTL-Wireless-Driveway-Business-Security/dp/B003CWK4JK/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1448809923&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=household+alert   I'm thinking about adding your system to mine... any downside to it?
  13. You might need to pre-filter the water before it gets to the Berkey.  I doesn't have to be fancy. In fact, it shouldn't be. It just needs to filter out large particulates so they don't clog the smaller membranes of a quality filter.
  14. We don't drink bottled water because it sits in a plastic container for days or weeks soaking up those carcinogens from the plastic. The Berkey sounds like a very good system, but we have system in place that works for us.   We use a Clear2O pitcher type filter to prefilter our tap water. Then, we pour the Clear2O filtered water into a ZeroWater pitcher. The ZeroWater pitcher basically gives us distilled water, removing all the chlorine and fluoride.    The downside of this approach are that it is slow. It takes a minute to fill the Clear2O pitcher and several minutes for the entire pitcher of water to filter through the ZeroWater filter. It's not a problem for us. We never empty the ZeroWater filter without refilling it, so we never have to actually wait for water.   We found that we couldn't use a ZeroWater filter without prefiltering the water because we have too many particulates in our tap water. The ZeroWater filter would clog up and stop working in 2-4 weeks. If you think about how a filter works, that makes sense.    EDITED: Just for kicks, I filtered bourbon through the ZeroWater. It delivered a colorless, tasteless water that registered zero particulates on my home test meter.
  15. This holster, as scary as it is, gives me an idea. You could take the Kydex trigger guard shown here.... http://www.amazon.com/MIC-Holster-Black-17-18/dp/B006VYBAZ8 and replace the paracord with shock cord and make a very similar holster.    Not saying I would do it. I prefer a real holster, but it could be done and it would be a heck of a lot safer.
  16. I drive from north of Nashville to Cool Springs three days a week. I make it a point to move all the way over to the left lane as soon as get onto I-65 South. The reason is that there are crazy drivers zigging left and right to pass cars in the other lanes. At least in the left lane, I can only get hit from a driver on the right instead of having both sides exposed. I typically go 70 to 75... but slower if that's the flow of traffic.   One night I'm on the same I-65 Southbound in the left lane and some jerk gets on my bumper and starts flashing his brights at me. There is a car 60 feet in front of me! And that car is on the bumper of the car in front of it... and so on as far as I could see. How is passing me going to get him anywhere any faster? I just ignored him.
  17. My wife and I stayed home... nothing I really want badly enough to wait in line to buy.     I swore when I left the military I would never wait in line again!
  18. Sounds like it's their house, so I'd just leave it in the car locked up. You can re-arm yourself when you leave or when you're driving somewhere.
  19. I have pocket carried the Kahr PM9, Shield, P238, and P3-AT with Armalaser. The Shield I'd rate as unsatisfactory because the thumb safety is too small. I much prefer the safety on the P238. Among the others, it's just a personal choice. The P3-AT requires some extra practice because it's so small.    You should consider putting the aftermarket Northwood trigger on you P11 or doing the trigger mods on http://www.thektog.org/   There's also a frame mod for the P11. Basically you sand down all the rough edges and reshape the tang to better fit your hand.  Then, you buff it out and add a hogue style grip.  You can also sand down the angles on the slide and re-blue it. You'd be surprised how much these minor mods improve the look of the P11. There are probably some pics over at KTOG.
  20. This is an interesting idea. Wheels. You never see it mentioned, but a folding bicycle would be nice if you have room for it. You'd also need bike tools, a tiny hand pump, and bike tools. With a bike over improved roads, you can average 10mph or so... 14mph if it's a road bike and not a folder. (An experienced cyclist would be faster, of course.) If you're knowledgeable about bikes, you can remove the front and rear wheels so it will store in a typical car's trunk.    I have a small folding push scooter with 12" wheels that could probably average 6-7mph with no more effort than walking.
  21. Thanks for an outstanding review. My friends who know I carry have asked me about this holster, so now I have a trusted review to comment about it. For me, it doesn't quite fit a niche that I need to fill.    I think I'm too small to carry in that position, but I'd love to try one for a few days. The distance between my belt line and leg when sitting is so short, it would seem that the gun would be pushed up or that it would push down uncomfortably into my leg.    I might check out their return policy.
  22. If you go to Holly Holm's Facebook page and scroll down, eventually you can find a 14:01 video of the entire fight. Holm owned Rousey. I boxed in college. I was never any good, but it sure looked to me like Rousey wasn't prepared to fight a boxer. She kept dropping her right hand and stepping up from Holm's left. Holm is a lefty.  Holm nailed her with the left several times in the first round.
  23. While you're building this, you should check out my previous review here on TGO of the Ulticlip. So far, I've only used my Ulticlips on IWB holsters like the Alien Gear, but it should work well for your purpose.    EDITED: Here's the link http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/92005-review-of-the-ulticlip-replacement-for-iwb-holsters/
  24. I think between now and her court date she should attend a good handgun safety course taught by someone well known in the law enforcement community. And then tell the judge that she was frightened for her life and didn't react the way she should have, but she won't do it again.   At the end of the day, no shots were fired.    My wife is about the same age. I would far rather see her go to court than risk what might have happened if she hadn't drawn on this guy, even if the odds of something bad happening were 10,000 to 1.   Also, it's a little harder for a women to intimidate a potential bad guy by holding her hand in her purse than for a guy in a similar situation.   I had a guy obviously following me in a Walmart parking lot. He was on the far side of the lane from me but glancing over at me. When I reached my car way in the back of the lot, he started to cross over towards me. I turned to face him and put my right hand on the small of my back. He quickly made a right angle turn and walked off. He assumed I was armed, even though he never saw a weapon and I never unholstered my gun. It's harder for a woman to do something like this if they are purse carrying.   Question: What would the proper protocol be for a frail 67-year-old woman when approached by someone who she felt threatened by?   I think she would be justified in drawing her weapon and holding it in the low ready position.
  25. Why would someone go to WalMart and wait in line... there's always a line... to buy one pack of cigarettes? Why would you buy cigarettes and no lighter? Why wouldn't you just wait until you got to your car and use its cigarette lighter? Why would you walk past an old lady and then double back to "ask her for a light?"
