  1. I own both. I prefer the Shield.    Glock 26: It's too thick to wear IWB for me.  The grip feels awful to me. It's too wide and too short at the same time. The ridges are in the wrong place.  The angle of the grip is wrong for me.  The fatness of the grip combined with the angle of the grip puts my index finger on the trigger guard instead of the frame when I draw it. This, combined with sympathetic reflex can cause the index finger to bend when the other fingers bend, sometimes causing it to slip inside the trigger guard.  As a result, all Glocks are an AD waiting to happen for me.  Note the "for me" added after all these comments. YMMV
  2. As I understand it, a tick must be attached for about 24 hours before you can get a tick borne disease. I check myself pretty carefully every day in the summer for ticks. I don't use sprays because that stuff can leach through your skin, regardless of how "safe" it says it is on the label.
  3. Is Linux Mint 17.3 fast? If so, I may give this a try.     On the dual boot, you need to be careful to boot into Windows periodically so it can load updates. If you don't, the updates will build up. Windows seemingly puts out a new one 3-4 times a month. I set up my dual boot to default to Linux and one of the Windows updates crashed because it couldn't reboot. That was 2012, but it fried my hard drive.
  4. This magazine looks interesting. It's $32 for 9 issues (a 12 month subscription). My questions are.   Is it a decent magazine or does it just repeat basic stuff that we already know?   If I subscribe, will I be inundated with "free" magazines and magazine offers for everything under the sun? If so, it's not worth the hassle. It took me three years to get unsubscribed from Runners World and Outside.
  5. I rarely use the trackpad. My wife and I use a wireless mouse instead. We both tend to brush the trackpad with our palms when typing, which causes the trackpad to do all sorts of unwanted things. You can get a decent wireless mouse for $15, no need to pay $30 or more. I use a 5-button Logitech M510... about $14 on eBay.
  6. It's just me and my wife. Our plan is for her to stay in the bedroom, call 911 and our neighbor who is with TBI, and arm herself with the 40 caliber carbine. I'll check out the bump in the nights.  In case we're not in the bedroom, I keep a loaded gun in every room of the house and a long gun near every door.   I didn't see this mentioned, so maybe I missed it...   With kids the equation changes a lot. I would not trust today's kids around firearms. I would not have firearms around if their friends came to visit. The risk of AD is just too high compared to the risk of an armed break in.   I'd have a fingerprint safe in the bedroom and in another room if the bedroom was too far or inaccessible. The rest of my firearms would be locked up like Fort Knox.    My opinion might change depending on the kids, their ages, and their training.
  7. Hold down the Ctrl button and press the "+" button (That's the plus sign button). The font will get bigger. Do it again, the font will get even bigger. Keep doing that until you get to the size font you want.  To make the font smaller, hold down the Ctrl button and press the "-" button (That's the minus sign button).   I think this approach will work in any browser.   By the way, there is a combination of finger movements on the touchpad that will also make the font bigger or smaller. You probably inadvertently did this. I do it all the time, but the fix is just to follow the steps above to get the font back to the size you want.
  8. This is why I carry concealed. No one in the Cheesecake Factory is going to know I'm carrying, so no need to unholster/reholster.    EDITED: It's also why I don't carry a Glock, but that's another story. It's an excellent gun as long as steps are taken to keep Murphy out of the equation.
  9. You should be able to pick up a decent size SSD on eBay for about $40. I'm thinking about replacing my 32GB SSD with a 128GB SSD.
  10. After reading the thread on Windows 10, I thought some of our members might be interested in this Groupon deal.  It's an Acer 15.6" Chromebook for $119.    While the Chromebook has limitations, you can easily set it up to dual boot into Linux Ubuntu or a few other flavors of Linux by using a program called Crouton.  See here for installation instructions.    I have Crouton on my ASUS 13.3" Chromebook. It works great. This Chromebook is limited in that it has only 2GB of RAM and a 16GB SSD drive.  I'm guessing that a RAM upgrade would be about $40 and if you use the cloud for storage, you can work around the 16GB limitation. If your laptop ever gets stolen, thieves wouldn't even know it had a 2nd OS.
  11. Install Classic Shell. Click the start button. Click Programs. A list of all your programs will appear, just like in Windows 7. You'll never have to search for a program again.   Download it. Install it. Play around with the various "shells" to see which you like best. You can choose between    Classic (looks like XP) Classic with two columns  Windows 7 style   Classic Shell is free. Download it here.  http://www.classicshell.net/   I haven't opened that Metro UI in months. My Windows 10 looks and feels a lot like Windows 7, only way faster.   EDITED: PS, I hated Windows 8 and 8.1. I hated them so much I wiped the hard drive back in 2012 and installed Linux Mint. I didn't go back to Windows 10 until the Technical Preview was made available to beta testers. By the way, the Technical Preview was a lot better than the final release, in my opinion. It was at least twice as fast.
  12. Do the math.... 2016  MacBook Air  $1,300  Dell Whatever (Too lazy to go downstairs and look at wife's laptop).  $250 2018 Dell/HP Another $250 2020 Dell/HP Another $250 2022 Dell/Hp Another $250 2024 Dell/HP Another $250     So, in 2024, you've spent $50 more than me and are chugging along on an 8 year old MacBook Air. I have a brand new laptop running Windows 18 (or whatever) and four old laptops running Linux Ubuntu/Mint.
  13. The problem with Macs is that they are stupid expensive. I just looked at Best Buy. The cheapest Mac laptop was $899 with many going into the $2,000-$3,000 range. The one I would probably want is about $1,300. Are you kidding me? I can buy a Dell, ASUS, or HP for $350 or less... maybe up to a $100 at the annual sales or on Dell's outlet website. Then, I can download all the free software I need: LibreOffice. Every two years, I can toss my laptop and upgrade to a newer version. My 17.1 inch HP that I'm typing this on was $250. My wife's new Dell was $250. My 13.1 inch Chromebook I use when flying was $165. That's $665, plus another $550 for my Sig Sauer anti-theft device comes to only $1,215.   Granted, my laptops are a little heavier than a MacBook Air, but I've been working out... :biglol:
  14. I thought I'd bump this to the top to get some recommendations for my upcoming flights. Here's my criteria for reading right now.   1. Good survival info for after an apocalypse. 2. Authors who have researched their topic enough to present accurate scenarios on EMP or electric grid failure, which I think are the most likely scenarios for a real SHTF situation.
  15. My first experience with FTE was with the Kel Tec P32. The KTOG forum taught users to lock the gun in position by pulling back towards you with the weak side hand grip and resisting that motion with a forward pressure to keep the strong hand in the same position. It seems work with all handguns that I've tried.
  16. Another +1 for Dropbox. Your files sync automatically online at dropbox.com and on all other computers you have shared your dropbox with. And it is fast!   I can click Save on a file on my laptop and less than 10 seconds later I can hear it sync on my wife's laptop across the room.    You can also share a file or a folder with anyone.  This is a really convenient feature. I use it to back up my wife's laptop on my dropbox account.
  17. Why not just switch to Chrome? I use AdBlock. I tried Edge when it first came out, then set my default browser to Chrome and never looked back. I'll take another look at Edge when it's been out for a year or so.
  18. If you're a big guy, you have a lot of options. If you're a small, skinny guy, then your ideal tiny gun is the P3AT, LCP, or TCP inside a thin pocket liner. You can carry front or hip pocket with the right holster. The Seecamp and Berettas are okay too, but heavier. If I was going to carry something as heavy as those, I'd just step up to the PM9, P938, or the Shield.
  19. Kel Tec Sub2000 in 40 caliber. It folds up to put in a backpack to carry discretely if necessary. It could also be carried folded under a long coat.  It weighs only 4 pounds. It has enough firepower to be used in a tactical situation.
  20. Sure, that was just a spur of the moment thing. I would suggest that you ask Rossi to replace the cracked stock with the black polymer stock. That's what I have and I think it looks better than wood, but your opinion might be different. That's what I would have done from day one.
  21. If you want to sell it, pm me. I don't care if the stock is cracked. I've posted a "Wanted: Circuit Judge... any condition" ad in the classifieds to keep it within the rules of TGO.    I've always wanted a pair of matching 45 caliber revolvers.  :biglol:
  22. Almost everyone over 40 has testosterone at the low end of the range. It's called aging.  :biglol:   You might want to join a workout group if you can find one near where you live. As others have pointed out, it's great to have workout buddies. I work out daily at Franklin Strength. The workout varies from day to day and the attendees vary, but generally we have 4 to 10 adults. Our group workout lasts an hour and the trainer modifies the weights to the abilities of each participant. Today, I remember thinking, "There's no way I would push myself this hard if I was working out by myself."     Lots of studies show that high intensity workouts are best for boosting testosterone, but it's best to do it under supervision so someone can monitor your form so you don't get injured.
  23. Congratulations! Investing in your health is the best investment you can make. In your line of work, it's especially hard... not that I know first-hand, but I've heard about the lifestyle of musicians.    I'm mostly a runner, but I work out 4-5 times a week at Franklin Strength in Cool Springs. It was hard the first month and it's still "hard" but it is so much fun. Since I'm 68, most everyone is amazed that I can handle the workouts, but it's because I've stayed physically fit since I left high school.
  24. Survival books with DIY stuff would be worth their weight in gold. I have over a dozen in pdf/epub, a tablet, and a solar charger. Unfortunately, without a solar charger and ereader, they'd be worthless as trade.
  25. If a coyote comes on my property and I get a bead on it, it's getting shot... day, night, spotlight, moonlight, lunar eclipse...
