  1. This worked. I put one on both cars and both kept the cardinal away. The CDs on the plate glass windows were less successful, but 2 out of 3 worked. I'll put a second CD on the window she likes best and see if that works. At least both cars are now clean.
  2. Let's see if this works. It's a smartphone suction mount with zip ties to hold the CD far enough away from the car to rotate in the breeze.
  3. There are a pair of cardinals looking for a nest that keep banging on my car windshield and upstairs windows. Any idea on how to stop this? They're pooping on my car and deck. Yeah, I could shoot them, but the only trespassers I'd be forced to shoot are coyotes and humans.
  4. Video has now surfaced of this guy talking to someone saying he would file a lawsuit if they force him to leave. Later, he tells the Airport Authority guys that they will have to jail him. I'm not defending United, but there are two sides to this story. Dao contributed to his own injuries by forcing them to physically remove him from the aircraft. http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/incidents/new-video-shows-argument-that-led-to-united-airlines-passenger-being-dragged-from-plane/news-story/086a34ae08b0eb9f34beeea98a22e62b
  5. Lots of mistakes made here, including some major mistakes by the passenger. When law enforcement was brought in, he should have complied. I really think this guy was high on something. I have a friend who is a flight attendant and she tells me a significant percent of passengers are taking sedatives to sleep, anti-anxiety drugs because they are afraid to fly, or just drunk. After he is dragged off, he comes running back on the plane, according to one source, shouting, "I have to get home, I have to get home!" Who does that if they aren't impaired? Yeah, United handled it wrong. Then, the airport law enforcement handled it wrong. But this guy shares responsibility for what happened to him.
  6. Here ya go. Put a camper in the back and you have a zombie-proof mobile home. I've often wondered why this isn't the go-to vehicle in The Walking Dead. Zombies between here and your destination... no problem... take the wife and kids with you. Cars blocking the interstate... no problem... drive over them.
  7. You need to check out the rush hour traffic both ways. I drive from Nashville to Brentwood at 8:30am 2-3 times a week on I-65. Southbound traffic is okay, but northbound backup sometimes goes past Harding all the way to Concord Road. It could take an hour to get from Concord Road to Nashville some days on I-65. On the zero turn versus tractor, if you have a field with ruts, the zero turn is going to have problems scalping the field. You might just try driving your car over the field a few times. If the car is constantly rocking, it's going to be worse on a zero turn. Also, in the summer when it gets dry, all that chaff is going to come up to you... same with a tractor with a belly mower. I have 4 acres to mow and use an old Kubota tractor with a 72" rear mount 3-blade finishing mower. That puts the chaff behind me. I had no allergies when I moved to Tennessee 20 years ago, but it became a problem for me about two years ago so I wear a surgical mask when mowing. Trimming around trees and bushes will be more of a hassle with a tractor, so it's a trade off. Placement of the house will make a difference in heating/cooling. EDIT: Oh, and no matter how long the commute, it will be longer when it rains. Nashville drivers forget how to drive in the rain. And snow... forget about it.
  8. I don't need to know what's wrong with this to know something is wrong with this.
  9. Situational awareness is important. Anticipating situations and avoiding them is equally important. I'm never out that late. If I were out that late for an emergency, I wouldn't need to stop for gas because... I never go home without enough gas left in the tank to make another trip and return home. I don't gas up after dark. I always gas up at my neighborhood gas station that prominently posts a sign "Concealed Carry Welcomed Here." If for some reason all the above failed and someone is casing me while filling up, I am definitely putting my right hand in the 5 o'clock position under my jacket and looking in their direction. There is no need to expose your handgun or even have a handgun. Bad guys know what this movement means. I was followed into a parking lot once. I was positive because I noticed it early and zigzagged to get to my car and was still followed. When I reached my car, I paused, looked over at him, and casually put my hand in the position described. The guy never made eye contact, but immediately peeled off.

    New Micro gun?

The micro guns aren't fun to shoot and they're more difficult to aim, so I'm not sure I would buy one if I wasn't going to carry it. That said, I guess if I were buying now, I'd get the Ruger LCP 2 because of the new trigger. Moving up a little in size, the Sig P938 looks sharp with custom grips and a Kahr PM9 is about the same size if you want a double action trigger.
  11. I enjoy math puzzles, so I used this photo to find the distance from the edge of the front wheel to the point where the back wheel just begins to lift off the ground. That distance is 71.1 inches. The distance from the edge of front wheel to the exact middle of the rear wheel is 66.8 inches. According to a Ford forum, the Sport Trac bed including the tail gate with the tail gate down is 70 inches, so the rear wheel would just barely be on the tail gate. However.... The diagonal from front left to the rear right edge of the tail gate with the tail gate down is 86 inches. Of course you can angle the front wheel into the front corner of the bed and put the bike in diagonally with the front wheel turned all the way to the left. The rear of the bike will still be on the tail gate, but it won't extend past the end of the tail gate.
  12. Why don't you go with a buddy and just ride it back? Three hundred miles is a long way for a dirt bike, but you could alternate riding it for an hour apiece. Or better yet, just leave the tailgate down and use some ratchet tie downs to hold it in place. It's not going anywhere as long as the middle of the back wheel isn't hanging over the back of your tailgate. You might need to tie a red flag on the back wheel. Or see the solution below. FWIW, it looks like my tie down approach would work. The middle of the back tire is not off the back of the truck. EDIT: Oops, I just that's not a Sport Trac, but the concept is the same. The Ford forum I went to said the Sport Trac bed was 70" long with the tail gate down. The middle of the back wheel should still be on the tail gate.

    HumVee

I didn't mean that he bought a government surplus Humvee. He bought a street legal 2004 H2. The various websites that provide estimated mileage gave the 2004 H2 a 10.5 mpg rating, as I recall. Most of the 2000-2004 were rated in the 10-11 mpg range. These were reports averaged from owners, not the bogus ratings the car manufacturers put out.
  14. I was talking to a buddy of mine who was complaining about the color (black) of his slide. I joked that a satin slide with a Tiffany blue frame would be beautiful. He wasn't aware that you can have a gun Ceracoated in any color he liked. He asked for a recommendation and I don't know anyone who does this. He is in the Nashville/Hendersonville area. He's probably not going with Tiffany blue, though. Some people have no taste.

    HumVee

A buddy of mine bought a 2004? Humvee. It seems that repairs are a lot more expensive than you might think. It also gets about 10-11 mpg. If you drive 15,000 miles a year as I do, that's going to get old pretty fast.
  16. I carry the ThruNite Ti3 on my keychain with a 3.7V 10440 rechargeable battery instead of a AAA battery. It's about twice as bright as the AAA. In the car and in my bags, I have several Sipik SK68 clones by various manufacturers. They use one AA and cost about $6 typically. Some are junk and some are surprisingly good lights. The downside is that light is so bright the battery only lasts 20 minutes or so, but I use rechargeable batteries so that really doesn't matter to me. My dog walking favorite light is the BLF A6. It costs $19 to $29 from www.Banggood.com. The A6 uses 18650 batteries and has a 7/4 mode selection. The 7 mode is moonlight up to 100% and then a turbo boost mode for #7. It can also be switched to the blinky/SOS mode.
  17. Nice little gun, especially for under $200. I've owned one for years. Unlike some of the small manual safety guns, the thumb safety is big enough to reliably hit every time.
  18. I agree with all this. I never call a car rental company on the phone. I book the car online. You have a reservation and an email/page capture of what you're renting and how much you are paying. You can adjust the hours for pickup/return to get the best rates. You can choose the options you want. I've used Priceline, Orbitz, Hotwire, Southwest Airlines, Budget, Enterprise, Alamo, and National. I've never had any problems. It's a good idea to double check that your rate is what you were quoted online. I usually take a photo of the reservation so I can show it at the counter if necessary. Let me repeat, I don't book a car by phone or at the counter. One time I needed a car, but didn't have a reservation. I went to the counter and was quoted... can't remember now... maybe $75/day. I sat down with my phone, logged onto one of these websites listed above, and booked a car for immediate pick up for half that amount. Of course, a lot depends on availability at that time. I've rented SUVs and minivans for no more than a compact. You just need to see what the deals are online. If I need a car locally for four days, I'll just rent it for the week. The rates are about the same as a 4-5 day rental.
  19. I'm turning 70 and got the lifetime permit this month... call me an optimist.
  20. We went, but couldn't get in. The line was a mile long! Plus, it was too cold to wait for hours in line. I did get a few photos of protesters.

    Snow

Two inches on the ground at 7:45am just 10 miles northwest of Nashville.
  22. What is facetime?
  23. I have only used Facebook chat so far. I found several different apps for the Android with FaceTime in the name. I've used Skype voice only in the past. If I use a laptop, I'd need to set up the boot to load the video program. Mom isn't going to be able to find it otherwise. Oh, the facility has Wifi, so we don't need a hotspot. Grady
  24. Good point. I might need to use one of those anti-theft cables. I have a couple of old Chromebooks with the anti-theft cable slot. That might work. I hadn't thought of using a laptop. Mom can barely handle answering a phone.
