  1. WV sent troops to both sides, as did Tennessee. My GGGrandpappy's brother won the MOH during the War, obviously while fighting for the North. The northwestern counties of VA always felt like the poor cousins of the tidewater Virginians as they had few slaves, there were no plantations, and their needs were generally ignored. Secession was a bitter pill for a lot of them to swallow.
  2. We all are, but it's helpful to know where you stand in the local pecking order -- it's better to be a peck-or than a peck-ee.
  3. Scary - I understood almost all of this. I think I'm becoming a geek. Well, I've been one for years, just not professionally for a long time, and I was a semi-geek then, a Unix system administrator. I don't understand the recommendation to run a firewall separate from the router firewall - explain please. Don't want to hijack the thread, so don't respond publicly unless it can be of use to the OP. Reading and learning!
  4. According to Red9mm's post, yes there's hope that you might become (or are!) a naturalized Southerner. It's that danged Ohio River! So close, and yet so far away! I'll bet you even know that tire and car rhyme, doncha?
  5. Here's a tip for you Jamie - the stick I'm using now is sassafras with a big root knob. It's not heavy, surprisingly stout and it smells good!
  6. Thank ya. Red9mm - I understand now. Please pass them grits . . . .
  7. I was behind enemy lines, rekonoit . . . . recconoti . . . . spying.
  8. I'm partial to plain but distinctive sticks, with a good sized knob. Sort of the Shillelagh type. I have no objections to metallic inserts. "Bodark" is a corruption of Bois d'Arc, French for bow wood. Osage Orange was a popular bow material amongst the aboriginal Americans.
  9. Well, you're ahead of me. I'm still trying to find out if I'm a yankee at all, being from WV south of the line.
  10. You're aware that the Mason-Dixon line is about 65 miles south of Pittsburgh, and that a good chunk of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois are south of it? Some of West Virginia is south of the line, and some is north of it. Are some West Virginians yankees? Are some Ohioans, some Hoosiers, and some Illini NOT yankees? If being born north of the line makes you a yankee, then I'm not one, though I've lived most of my life in Michigan (so far).
  11. In the case of an invasion, I'm afraid we'll need more than deer rifles. I'm sure the Bambi Militia will be a great help, but they couldn't stand alone.

    Dog Food

Heated arguing over dog food? Name calling? If it doesn't stop I'll close the thread.
  13. I think you'll have trouble finding such a range within your constraints. I'd think that most ranges don't have adequate insurance coverage.
  14. Are they born or made? How long must a yankee live in the south before he's no longer a yankee? Where is the 'north'? Where is the 'south'? If a southerner moves to yankeeland, does he become a yankee? If so, is it reversible? How about the opposite? Are Kentuckians and West Virginians yankees? If a Tennessee couple gits them a dee-vorce, are their kids still cousins?
  15. What does it matter -- he was acquitted. However, he's in prison where he belongs now. I don't think F. Lee can get him out.
  16. "Make a fist and stamp your foot. Scowl!"
  17. Somewhere along the line during the last 30 years I seem to recall a rule-of-thumb that a bullet should be seated at least 1 bullet diameter deep in the case mouth. OAL definitely can affect max pressure if the bullets are seated too deep, but apparently there is no problem with exceeding recommended OAL, at least with bottle-necked rifle cartridges. I have been loading long-out-of-spec rounds for my M94 Swede for many years. As long as the rounds fit in the magazine and the bullet isn't pushed back into the case (by the rifling) when you chamber a round, you're good to go. My M94 has a long leade due to the looong 156 gr RN military bullets it was designed for. I seat my 140 gr spire point bullets about .020 off of the rifling and they still fit the mag. Whether there's an accuracy difference in doing so, I don't know, but there is supposed to be. The rifle has always shot better than I do. I'm not a reloading expert, so this is not a recommendation that you exceed published OAL in your case.

  20. For me, one of the biggest benefits of a safe* is the corrosion protection you can achieve. I've used a goldenrod clone in my safe for the last 4+ years and have had NO corrosion problems and no maintenance to the goldenrod. I haven't used my dehumidifier canisters or RIG in quite a while. I still lightly oil and wipe down my guns when I put them in the safe. [* Residential Security Container ]

    Dog Food

I used to buy whole frozen chickens (really cheap!) and boil them for my dogs. They got the meat, I got the broth, skin & bones for making chicken stock for soup. Win - Win!

    Dog Food

My little dog is on an expensive dog food (venison + potatoes + nothing) due to suspected food allergies. Earlier, she'd eat anything I gave her, except black olives. I believe that dogs will eat an unhealthy diet, if that's what's provided to them. They seem to prefer junk food. We owe them better.
  25. I was going to say $300-$400, depending on condition and how much the buyer wants it. I have an M94 and M38 in similar condition that cost in that range.
