  1. Welcome! Don't forget to post in the "How close do you live to a nuclear plant?" thread.
  2. The thought that's been nagging me for the last couple of weeks is: if Obama can't produce a Hawaiian, or any other US birth certificate, then it's almost certain that he's an illegal alien himself.
  3. There is a handy little item they sell at Lowe's and probably anywhere else you'd buy a water heater or repair parts. It's a water alarm, battery operated. You place the sensing unit on the floor or in the pan at the base of the heater and mount the sounding unit in a higher location. When it senses water the alarm goes off. I'm beginning to think I should flip my WH breaker and turn off the water when I go on trips.
  4. Not to mention logic. How could you have engineering without logic?
  5. I don't think that kerosene deteriorates, but a can of it will gather condensation. The water will pool in the bottom of the container and is quite obvious. Kerosene with water in it will ruin the wick in a kerosene heater. Coleman fuel is naptha, and I've always been told that you can't substitute unleaded gas for Coleman fuel unless the appliance was designed for it. I have a dual fuel Coleman lantern that I've always used unleaded in, and a couple of older lanterns that are Coleman fuel only. I wouldn't keep 10-12 gallons of gas in the basement of MY house, iffen I had a basement.
  6. Me too. As long as the internet is up, I can send and receive email via 2 meter packet radio as well as communicate with other packet stations whether the internet is up or not. "Ancient technology" - digital burst transmissions - what's not to love?
  7. I've seen the Erma Luger before, as a .22 Baby Luger. The store I worked in as a teenager sold them. I lusted after one, but $80 was way out of my price range at the time.
  8. 8 miles, but I don't consider the plant a threat. I'm thankful for it. I have 6 reactors within 111 miles of me, hoping for more. Watts Bar has a second unit under construction and there's a rumor that Bellefonte in Alabama will be restarted, if public and political hysteria doesn't stop it.
  9. Good choice - I think oil gives a superior finish - both better looking and more durable. I've used both Tru-oil and tung oil and both worked fine.
  10. I have a little lockable Rubbermaid yard shed sitting about 100 ft from my house. I keep treated gas for my power equipment and most oils, Coleman fuel, etc. in it. I've kept as many as 5 5-gallon cans at once. Treat the gas with a stabilizer, tag each can with date treated, and use them up within a year of the treatment date. My yard equipment and generator can't use that much gas in a normal year, so I use the excess in my truck.

    Punctuation is our friend.
  12. Well, Field Marshal, Doctor, President-for-life had already been used. I think he's one o'them Kentucky Colonels.
  13. Those cruise missiles weren't fired at random.
  14. That's one fugly slide on the 1911! Goes to show you that looks aren't everything.
  15. It might work, IF the phone lines are up. If cell is useless, landline probably will be also. And, no phone lines, no internet. Know what works when the grid/phone lines are down? Amateur radio. Think storage batteries, solar cells and HF/VHF radio. Nothing wrong with telling (in advance) your friends and family where you'll be when the SHTF. Like a pre-arranged rendezvous point.
  16. I have a couple of asses in my family too. Yours are nicer.
  17. The insides and primer pockets don't have to be spotless for successful reloading.
  18. Welcome!
  19. Delivering pizza can be a dangerous job, and just because you're armed doesn't mean you'll survive a robbery. Picture is of Fred Mager, former Weapons Platoon leader, 28th Inf Reg, 1ID, who was killed delivering pizza in Detroit, 3 June 2006. He survived his 1st robbery (robber didn't) but it didn't work out so well the 2nd time. Picture taken 16 October 1967.
  20. I've had it turn to varnish on the surfaces of a muzzleloading pistol that rarely leaves the safe.
  21. Just funnin' with ya. Following is the educational moment: "The Aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is a strepsirrhine native to Madagascar that combines rodent-like teeth with a long, thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker. It is the world's largest nocturnal primate, and is characterized by its unique method of finding food; it taps on trees to find grubs, then gnaws holes in the wood and inserts its elongated middle finger to pull the grubs out. Daubentonia is the only genus in the family Daubentoniidae and infraorder Chiromyiformes. The Aye-aye is the only extant member of the genus (although it is currently an endangered species); a second species (Daubentonia robusta) was exterminated over the last few centuries." The picture is of a juvenile. It's hard to believe, but they actually get better-looking as they get older and grow fur - not any uglier than a possum actually. Here's a few more dandies:
  22. I've been using Mobil 1 full synthetic for about 10 years. So far, so good. I think my quart will last several lifetimes.
